Is there a way to make OpenTTD challenging in single-player?

Post by JDPstudios »

I don't really like playing against AI, so I usually just start the map alone, but I find the game very easy even on hard, and without a challenge, it's kind of boring. Are there any mods available to change the economy to make it more difficult?

Any other ideas welcome
Thanks

Try FIRS. I've been playing a game for about 100 game years now, and still haven't connected all industries.
Especially if you're using the engineering/farm supplies, production will boost so much that you're always buying new trains, laying more tracks to accomodate those, etc. that there's not a lot of time to open new lines.

It isn't particularly difficult, but it keeps you busy all the time.

If you really want to increase difficulty, try a base cost grf to make things (much) more expensive. Personally I don't like that very much, because then you're more sitting and waiting for a train to generate income than actually building and improving stuff and spending your money.

Alternatively or additionally, try some of the goal scripts. Like town growth challanges etc.

"Neighbors are important" is a fun and challenging game script. Towns only grow if the required number of passengers/mail/goods/water, etc are met. The bigger the town gets, the larger these needs become, which adds a sense of realism.

Click the "AI/Game Script Settings" button from the main menu. If it isn't there, then you need down download the newest stable or nightly version of OpenTTD. Inside there, click "Check Online Content" and it will be under the "Game Script" listings.
