Rename Graphics Releases/Dev forums as NewGRF Release/Dev

Post by kamnet »

The Transport Tycoon Graphics Releases and Graphics Development subforums should be renamed as NewGRF Releases and NewGRF Development, to more clearly reflect that all NewGRFs, not just those dealing with graphics, should be discussed there.

You do realise that it is possible to develop graphics for TTD and possibly TTO that are not technically NewGRFs as those games don't support loading extra NewGRF files. Look up GRFDiff and the other tools that come with GRFCodec.

Maybe we should change it to Mod forums, a mod is commonly known as something that adds/replaces/fixes a certain game feature in other games after all (SimCity, Civilization etc.).

Is there actually any confusion right now or are we just imagining there's a problem?

Well we did have a user post some Town Name GRFs in the OpenTTD Development Forum earlier today.

While I agree that the name "Graphics" does not cover the entire scope of what that section is supposed to cover, I am not sure "NewGRF" or indeed "mod" fits better. I don't actually have suggestions as to what would fit better but I do see how it can cause confusion for people who perhaps visit for the first time.

I have no desire to change it right now. Possibly it could be renamed to "Graphics and Modifications" or something, like the Locomotion forums, but I'm not convinced there's a problem so far.

Modifications would also include Game Scripts (and possibly AIs).
While I can imagine the release forum to be about every type of modification (NewGRF, BaseSets and Game Scripts); the development forums should be separate, since the development process is entirely different. (Oh, and also I think that non-graphics NewGRF like townnames do not really need a development forum - release and technical forum should suffice.)

I do, but nobody's done so in years.

Perhaps the forum descriptions could help clarify what exactly these forums are meant for. But TBH I never really experienced any problems with the current situation.

I also don't think there is a problem, maybe OpenTTD Development can be renamed to something like OpenTTD Coding, so that it is more clear that it is about the OpenTTD code, as it also doesn't come out of the description.

I always assumed the OpenTTD Development forum is for the Development of OpenTTD itself, which could include an occasional graphic, isn't it?

Like graphics needing patches, such as traffic lights, right?

More like patches needing graphics. I remember someone asking for some icons for a few buttons for a new feature. But I don't really follow the Development forum closely. Hence why I'm kinda checking if I understood the goal of the forum correctly.

I asked for graphics for the Story Book in the graphics development forum. To me that felt like the area where I could find an audience that is interested in pixel art and creating graphics for the game. But it may be possible that I would have got responses also in the OpenTTD development forum.

As I see the OpenTTD development forum, it's a forum where you can post patches (for OpenTTD) for discussion and feedback from forum users. Eg. a possible broader audience than posting the patch on bugs.openttd.org. Eg. you may have different GUI design ideas and want feedback on that.
