Ain't going to happen, Apple is screwing iOS devices owners over. GPL licensed software is not allowed in the Apple store. I've also reported this topic as it should've been posted in the OpenTTD subsection of this forum.

As said, Apple has banned OpenTTD from its AppStore as they do not like to have GPL-licensed software in it. So I strongly doubt that you'll get it via UK's AppStore.

Topic also moved to the proper board.

It would be nice, though, if somebody resumed iOS porting, shared that back w/ the dev team so it can become an official release, and then publish it for installation on jailbroken devices.

Let's first find an Apple dev for normal openttd to fix all open [OSX] bugs, shall we?

Short and sweet answer - no.

You'd then have to contact all of the several hundred contributors and convince them to let you relicense their work.

Hint: That isn't practical...

And that's the longer but still only marginally more helpful answer.

I know for a fact that relicensing to "please" Apple is not going to happen in the coming 70 years, unless copyright laws change. However, they seem to have only changed these laws to increase that time frame.

If people are willing to jailbreak their iOS device and install applications from third-party stores, or directly installing the software themselves, then distributing OpenTTD with the GPL license is not an issue. But you cannot expect people to go through the effort of jailbreaking, which makes convincing somebody to maintain an iOS port impractical. All of that, though, is more likely to happen than ever convincing Apple to open up their App Store to include GPL software fairly.

I don't understand what you are trying to say here.

@trainman1432:
What did you expect??

Apple is known for being hostile against everything except Apple itself.

By buying a device from them, you acknowledge that you are fine with them controlling what you can and cannot do with your device. Apparently you value ease of use more than having certain rights with devices you bought.
Personally, I would have made a different choice, but you are not me. If you are happy with not controlling the content of the devices you own, everything is fine.

Next, they exercise the right that you gave them. They throw out GPL licensed software. Why do you expect us to solve your problem?

Like Rubidium, I also know for a fact it will take approximately at least 70 more years before you can change the license. It may be quicker to make a new program and new sprites.

Edit: Fixed the expiration time of the current license

If you buy an iOS tablet, you are very very restricted in what you can do with it, as Apple choose to maintain certain controls. That's part of the deal for iOS (fortunately much less so for OS X).

If you don't like it, then exercise your right to buy a different device :)

Short answer: Apple hates freedom.
Don't panic - My YouTube channel - Follow me on twitter (@XeryusTC) - Play Tribes: Ascend - Tired of Dropbox? Try SpiderOak (use this link and we both get 1GB extra space)

There seems to be a version here. However it's not free which is against GPL. Devs, do you know about this?

That is not true. You may ask money for a GPL application. However, it must be accompanied by the source code or a written offer (valid for at least 3 years) for getting said source code. If neither is fulfilled it is against the GPL. The mere act of asking money for it is not; the license even mentions certain cases where you may ask money explicitly.

Note that "written offer" means an actual sheet of paper, so this approach is generally not valid for downloads.
