Problem Starting Openttd
Hi
I don't know if anyone can help.
I've just installed Openttd v1.6.1 onto my computer which is Windows 8.1
Each time I try to start the program I get the message; 'trying to load graphics set 'original Windows', but it is incomplete. The game will probably not run correctly until you properly this set or select another one. See section 4.1 of readme.txt. The following files are corrupted or missing: TRG1R.GRF, TRGIR.GRF, TRGCR.GRF, TRGHR.GRF, TRGTR.GRF. After each of these is (you can find it on your Transport Tycoon Deluxe CD-ROM)
If I click the ok button on the window, I get the message repeated. if I click OK button on this window, I get a message that says; 'cannot open file 'TRG1R.GRF''
I've checked the readme, under section 4.1 but all it mentions about is that to install the three separate gfx, msx, and sfx files, but I had these installed by the Windows loader when I installed the program.
Please can someone help as this has me stumped.

Re: Problem Starting Openttd
I believe these are the default graphics set that you only get if you install OpenTTD with the original TTD disc available to rip the files from. Did you do this?
I'm also not sure I'm allowed to give you these, as they are probably still under copyright.

Thanks for the reply.
I've just tried this and ripped the files off of the disk but it still hasn't worked

Sorry, it has worked now. Not sure what I did but it's now working

Just to answer your question, no you are not allowed to distribute them, they are still under copyright.Redirect Left wrote:I believe these are the default graphics set that you only get if you install OpenTTD with the original TTD disc available to rip the files from. Did you do this?

Gotta love the internet, a well worded google search gives no less than 6 working links on the first page to download them (or the game itself) from. Gotta love the internet and its lack of rule enforcementkamnet wrote: Just to answer your question, no you are not allowed to distribute them, they are still under copyright.

Re: Problem Starting Openttd
Well I didn't say you couldn't do it, I just said you were not allowed to do it. I'm pretty sure it's probably possessed by about 95% of OpenTTD users anyhow.
I know my copy is legal, though.

Re: Problem Starting Openttd
I'm honestly a bit surprised anybody bothers with the original TTD files... are they really so much better than what OpenGFX and NewGRFs offer? I never actually saw them, only played Locomotion before OpenTTD.
Re: Problem Starting Openttd
Some people swear by them as the gold standard. I've become so normalized to everything else that I think original TTD graphics are pretty awful looking.

Re: Problem Starting Openttd
How does the old graphics perform, considering OpenTTD has added some new stuff, which I assume isn't going to be in the original files? I remember a few things where if you had an outdated OpenGFX they displayed oddly, doesn't that happen a lot with the original graphics?
Re: Problem Starting Openttd
openttd provides an extension file for the original graphics (called openttd.grf), which is updated by the devs whenever openttd adds something. the problem with outdated opengfx is that these changes need to trickle down to the separately developed opengfx project, so it does not occur here. (unless you mess up and have an outdated openttd.grf file somewhere in the search path or do an incomplete update)
what always put me off from ditching the original graphics and switching over to opengfx was that opengfx did some questionable artist decisions in order to set itself apart from the original graphics, and some things are really poorly done. everything looks so fuzzy and un-sharp, and the colours are generally a bit darker and lifeless...

Re: Problem Starting Openttd
I have played Transport Tycoon, and I have played OpenTTD with OpenGFX,ZBase,etc...I don't think I would recognize a TT DELUXE graphic if I fell over it,if it isn't the same as a TT graphic.
Re: Problem Starting Openttd
I only played transport tycoon in the 90s, which had the same artist as TTD, but was slightly different in many areas. As a result, I never really spent the decade-plus that many die-hards played with TTD graphics, between TTD's release and the completion of OGFX, so I didn't grow to love them in the same way. I only played OpenTTD with TTD sprites for a few years.
That said, like Eddi, there are a few differences that stick out to me, although I totally appreciate the artists being creative and differentiating their work. Most egregious to me is the Nakagin Capsule Tower, as this is an important building to me personally, and my experience with it began when I first saw it in TT in 94. I think the OGFX capsule tower actually does a great job of capturing the spirit and ideas of the Metabolist movement, better theoretically than the TT/TTD sprite, but it missed the dramatic contrast and color, and sharp angles that made the original sprite leap out to me and send me on a years long journey of studying the building and it's architect (in the years before wikipedia and the revival of the metabolist movement). It is this sort of dynamic, bold artistic liberty Foster took with his shading and textures that most of the old-timers seem to love, and something missed entirely in most rendered sprites.
There are some sets that seek to 'fosterize' their pixels as much as possible, and look good with either baseset. Notably are older sets by Pikka, or newer sets that Andythenorth and DanMack et all have worked on. We just need an Andy town set now...
