Adding real seaplanes to OpenTTD

Post by ercolesptr »

Adding seaplanes to the game with the ability for these to land both in airports and on the sea. Then using a ship quay to embark and disembark passengers, etc. This would add a new refreshing game play mechanism indeed!

There's already been some progress in this direction, although there are still a few quirks with it.

It may never make it into the base game, but you can download some NewGRFs to get there.

First, download OpenGFX+ Airports. I'm not sure if the current version via in-game content download has it, but the nightly versions have a Seaplane Airport. It's still technically a land-based airport that just looks like water, and you'll have to do a little work if you actually want them to blend in with river, canal or sea tiles, but it's a good illusion.

Next, download AV9, and edit the configuration so that seaplanes are enabled. It has a small selection of seaplanes and flying boats.

Finally, if you'd like to help move this forward further, I have compiled stats for seaplanes that need people to draw artwork for them. if you can help draw them then I can find somebody who will code them into a NewGRF set.
