A new OpenTTD YouTube series...

Post by jellinga »

I hope I'm posting this in the right forum - it was a bit of a contest between this and off-topic, but I figured it's very much related to OpenTTD; if this is in the wrong place, please feel free to move it.

For your enjoyment, and my disappointment at the lack of English-language OpenTTD Let's Plays on YouTube, I've chosen to start my own series in which I play OpenTTD! So far I've been following a roughly every-other-day schedule of building up my train empire in the "Germany" scenario I found, but my goal is really only to upload a video whenever I can, which may mean only once or twice a week.

The first episode can be found here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m7RJFsrX ... x8&index=3
And the playlist for all (currently 3) episodes can be found here: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL ... AY8CykNvx8

Happy transport-tycooning! Let me know what you think such that I can improve!

I'll be honest, I stopped watching after a minute. The video is in 720p, but everything is fuzzy. You're not prepared to present your tutorial at the start by changing configurations. It was difficult to understand what you were trying to present because you were making off-the-cuff remarks rather than writing down what you wanted to say and presenting that in a clear, logical manner.

Thanks for your input! Maybe I should have been more clear in this post - it's not necessarily a tutorial series, so much as a series in which I play the game and describe what I am doing along the way, which obviously isn't something for everyone but it's been a rather popular style of video on YouTube recently. Eventually, I do plan to make a tutorial video which will be planned out more thoroughly and explain things like signals and stations. I'll agree with you on the 720p thing, though that's more a fault of YouTube's compression than anything else, since the file on my computer is crystal-clear. Your input is much appreciated, though!

Ahhh, in that case, yep, I typically don't watch those things, maybe it's a generational thing though. My kids love watching that stuff for Minecraft and a few other games, I just don't personally see the appeal.

I watched the second and third videos for a few minutes, and those are MUCH more clear (impressively so!). I noticed that your first video has 150 views, but the second and third only have a few views. You may want to consider re-uploading your first video, the bad quality may be turning people off from deciding to watch subsequent videos.

I think it definitely is a generational thing - I used to think "whaat? Why would people watch this?" But often the gameplay and personality behind the narration makes it remarkably interesting. Not as interesting as an actual, studio-produced TV show, but as a way to pass time, it certainly does the trick.

I'd consider reuploading the first episode to accommodate the difference in quality. It's very strange that that happened, though, since I processed all videos exactly the same way. As for the views, I'm really not surprised - the first episode probably has a much greater number of views than the second or third because people generally watch the start of the series, then lose interest (like you did!) or don't have time to watch the rest; much like the season premiere of a TV show always has the highest ratings. Similarly, I *did* make a post on the OpenTTD Reddit when I posted the first video, but only edited that post for the second and third, so I'd imagine that has something to do with it; the first video obviously had more publicity.
