old-style bridge set [getting started]

Post by lobster »

well well well, esteemed fellow forum users. welcome to the old/classic style bridge set. if you don't agree with that name, we'll have a poll later on. but first things first.

i'm interested in creating a bridge set consisting of various classical and/or traditional looking bridges. no fancy future sciencefiction bridges, no, plain, old, cool bridges. nice ones. open ones. whatever crosses your mind.

to do this, i need both coders and drawers. ofcourse, eis_os is an excellent coder, but he's a busy man, and i don't know if this project'll interest him enough to participate in. so, coders are wanted. more important in this stage are drawers, and if NorfolkSouthern's bridges (from the other topic) are available, i'd like to get my hands on those. otherwise, maybe Purno will lend a hand here and there, and i'm sure there's various other just dying to draw me a bridge. *winks*

allright, later on things as "how many bridges will there be", "what will be the official set name", "who'll write the readme", "where's the tracking table" and "do you eat pancakes" will be answered. for now, i present you with the 15 minutes i spent on trying to do my very first bridge. ofcourse, it looks like s***, but that's not the point. the point is that you'll get the idea. :D

let the post and reply commence!

But the ramp up to the bridge needs to be extended all the way to the tile line, there can't be a little bit of a flat part before the climb otherwise I reckon it won't look good when a train/truck passes over that tile as it will will start to climb before the ramp...

very true indeed, but since this is only a small try, it's something we have to keep in mind later on. it was actually meant as rail bridge, but the top was quickly fixed, so that would be different if there'll be a finished version of this bridge. also, i'm thinking about a nice set-up for this bridge, with a similiar piece but spreading over 2 tiles. i'll post something to explain this later on.

[edit]
i'll try it in ASCII:

Code: Select all

like this:
 ____ ____ ____ ____ ____ ____
| | | | | |
| | | | | |

Great start Astath ... the thread that is ... the bridge needs work.

Keep in mind that in ttdx the bridges do double duty ... rail AND road ... they have to support both deck types ... so afaik you can't draw a bridge just for rail, etc. ... I may be wrong and would very much enjoy being corrected on this as it would give a lot more room for variety. 8)

I'm looking forward to seeing what the artists come up with. :D

wally/patchman: i know, i know, t'was just a concept drawing. but the road thing isn't that much of a problem, i guess the various roadsets could be, but hey.

personally i believe it's better to first draw loads of bridges and discover there's some problems later. you see it with lots of other projects, there's loads of discussions about issues with readme's, engines, colours and whatever crosses their path, and the project never really reaches anything. so this project will do things differently, let me assure you. :)

Great work! That bridge looks really neat.

How about making the arch a bit more curvy? It looks quite straight, while the stone bridges in the eary 1900s had quite curvy arches. Especially the arch spanning over 2 tiles should be more curved.
And, higher bridges of that kind could have a really cool design...
By the way, do we really need maglev and monorail? By they time these two transportation system are introduced, bridges were made of concrete... ;)

Otherwise, your bridge is great. Can't wait to see more of that!

Unfortunately Maglev and Monorail are automatically included with any bridge as are roads and rail. It will be up to the player to use good judgement.

allright, sounds like a good plan... :) and if you have ány other info on older bridges, do not hesitate to post it. i mean, realism is nice, but not too much, while a detail like this cán make a set so much better.

in fact, i hereby command everyone that's even remotely interested in this set to do concept-drawing!
yes, this is not because i don't like criticism, since there's nothing wrong with that, but because that way we get loads of great ideas stacked together, which'll inspire people and make us get even móre great ideas together. it'll make it a lot easier to pick out the best concepts. :)

so, if you have an idea of any kind, post it with any media you think are necessary (paint, ascii, even scanned drawings, whatever!) and we'll look into it! :)

It really needs texture and light effects.

EDIT: It also looks somewhat thin...
