New Highspeed Train in USA soon

Post by Tattoo »

I just heard on the tv that we are going to get a highspeed train here in the US. Can't wait to see it. We finally get one here in the US. I'm curious to see what it looks like. I don't know when it'll be ready but it's coming to Chicago so I'll get to see it up close. Can't wait..

Why write this in a Locomotion section ? It should be in General Transport Discussion.

If everyone just posted in the section that they participated in the most, this forum would be mayhem. It only takes a minute or two to find the correct area of the forums and think "hmmm... where does the point I'm about to make fit into".

it is my understanding that it is not "a" high speed train, but "higher speed" trains.

It is to be like "Michigan Amtrak". They have high speed trains running there.

To clarify it, instead of the usual 75(?) MPH speed limit. It has 95(?) MPH and expected to eventually go to 110(?)MPH for large sections do to Improved signaling, track maintenance and GPS. The Michigan trains and track are actually controlled and leased by the State of Michigan.

If I'm not mistaken (I could be), Once you hit Niles or Kalamazoo, the tracks are no longer NS but Amtrak owned. one of the few track sections where Amtrak owns the track. You see "no trespassing NS property" signs. then you switch off the NS main and all the signs say "No Trespassing "Amtrak Property" all the way past Ann Arbor (I Never rode it further then that).

The trains are also a Special pool of trains due to the advanced signaling and state lease. they run just the Michigan <> Chicago runs. Similar to the CalAmtrak Units. they just didn't get a special paint job. In fact. they were the last trains to get painted into Phase V. many went from III to V skipping IV. Because they were not scheduled for heavy maintainece and could not come out of service just for some paint. The cabbages on that run are just now going to Phase V from III.

Remember, the P40/P42 was designed for 103 MPH speed. We just get to see them streach their legs and do what they were built for finally.

So, unfortunatly... No, we wont be getting an Acella To Chicago.. for now...

Are they going to use P42's/cabbage set for power?

Don't they usually use the "cabbages" in push/pull operation, giving both baggage space and a control cab with a full FRA compliant locomotive frame?

I'm not getting involved in a petty argument about this. I reported the original post, and simply told you where you should have posted it. It isn't really "doing the work of a moderator" by letting you know that the New Highspeed Train in USA soon is not a LoMo mod, the same as my screenshot thread does not belong in Forums Suggestions and Feedback.

Can a moderator just cut out all the OT in this and let this focus on the topic title now?

I know he does. So do I..

EDIT: I'm not trying to start an argument either. I just get a charge out of people acting as a moderator when they're not. I say Let the moderators moderate and mind your own business. That's why moderators are put in place. Report it and move on.

That train is "The Lincoln Service". one of the crappiest names in the Amtrak list of names. It is considered a commuter train to Amtrak.

It is usually 1 Loco and 4 Cars:

1 P42
1 cafe (horizon or metroliner)
3 Coaches (Horizons, once in a while you might see a long distance Horizon mixed in)

http://www.trainweb.org/usarail/lincolnservice.htm

No Cabbage on this run..

The "Texas Eagle" also makes the same run once a day continuing on to San Antonio, TX
ostlandr wrote:Don't they usually use the "cabbages" in push/pull operation, giving both baggage space and a control cab with a full FRA compliant locomotive frame?
The Idea behind the cabbage was a cheap to build control car. Amtrak was retiring its F40 fleet so a few had the engines removed and the fuel tanks filled with concrete for added weight.

they added a roll up door to allow the now empty engine room to be used for baggage. Hence the name "CAB-baggAGE". It also now allows for the removal of the baggage car from the train. Amtrak now calls them an NPU. or Non (No?) Powered Unit. This allows for push pull service. "The Wolverine" is a prime example of this. It is always a P42, 3-6 cars, a second P42 or a Cabbage.

AS far as I know. Amtrak does NOT use them for baggage. Especially with post 9/11 security. I have seen a few odd uses of them in photographs, like a bike or a coffin in one.

In my 100+ trips on cabbaged train trips, I have yet to see one used for baggage.

The cabbages assigned to the Cascades service here don't even have roll-up doors on the side.

I think there was some discussion of a possible Portland OR - Vancouver BC higher speed corridor. Currently it looks to be a bunch of hot air.

Yeah, we have one of the brown and green Cascades NPU's here in Chicago. I see it like clockwork rolling into chicago at about noon. Horrid paint job...

It wouldn't be so bad if they changed the brown to a dark blue

I have seen that Cascades unit around too.

But to me, this business of higher speed rail in the midwest is Deja Moo - the sensation I have heard this bull before!

I mean, come on, how many times have they said they are serious about it? For how long?
