Irwe's houses

Post by Irwe »

New thread: http://www.tt-forums.net/viewtopic.php?f=26&t=44360

After being introduced to the world of drawing I wanted to try something more advance.

I present to you my first ever created building! It's just a general store based on one not far from my home. It comes in 2 different versions, one with a parking lot and a second one without a parking lot (flowers instead).

I think the colors are a bit to bright.

Nice.

If you want it to fit original TTD style you need to modify the colours. Took me a while to get used to, all the early sprites I drew were very high contrast (too much black and white where midtones worked better).

It's helpful to screenshot a game and paste it into your paint app for comparison (if your paint app supports layers that is easier).

cheers,

Andy

Now now, I don't think it was meant as an insult  It's just that the japan set sprites are flashier and more colorful than the default sprites.

Nice store, by the way :)

<Lakie> Well, they do the same thing but the code is different.

Assuming that you've intended to represent the roof as tiles...err don't bother. The detail and the repeating pattern won't work. I've learnt that the hard way enough times.

In the the picture below the building with the chimney started out with a regular tiled roof, it looked poor. Try mixing up the grid, using two or three colours which are adjacent in the grid.

I think you'll get this sorted. It just takes a little while to get used to how to use the available colours. If you nail it, we might be looking for some similar things for FIRS (a general store and a petrol station) ;)

Do you mean that I should try to get the roof to look less like a grid and use more colours?

Oops forgot to post the attachment I intended:

And here's how it started out (ignore the green false colour - that just makes drawing easier). Nasty grid :|

So, yep, try mixing up the grid. You don't want too many colours, just two or three for the whole roof - but change them for different angles to get the shading right.

Actually, I love the roof. It looks just like terra-cotta tiles: http://www.traditionalreclaimedmaterial ... a_roof.jpg.

That was the idea from the beginning, but the roof looks more or less dead... I want it to be more alive.

And I owe Simon Foster for that...all I've done is copy TTD original style by looking closely at what is actually getting drawn ;)

The building is now much better.
