Chris Sawyer's Shinkansen Trains

Post by GurraJG »

First off, sorry if this has been posted before, but I couldn't find any posts about this.

Chris Sawyer has apperently release a new scenario with new trains for Locomotion: Shinkansen Land 1970. According to his website, the train was developed in the early stages of LoMo production, but was not included in the final product. So now, he is releasing it, along with a scenario to go with it.

To get it, go to this site (Chris Sawyers official site):

I suppose little easter eggs like this show us that CS does care a bit about us mere mortals. If he didn't, why would be bother telling us these?

Or he realised that we like him A LOT less now so he releases an originally rejected train to try and tame us.

it´s good to know that a DAT-file can be "packed" in a scenario-file. didn´t know that.

I would argue that it's releasing things like this now that shows us that CS doesn't give a toss about us, and that there would have been a lot more to the game had he actually c*nting bothered to finish it properly in the first place.

As far as I know he didn't have the time because of Atari...

Chris is a one man team. I don't know how people can expect 100% support and feedback from one man, as well as official add-ons. He doesn't darerelease his email incase he gets flooded by emails from Rollercoaster Tycoon players. He is probably working on his next game. Remember that he hasn't stopped working on games since Transport Tycoon. He worked on Transport Tycoon 2 after deluxe, but that became Rollercoaster Tycoon. He then went on to Locomotion again, but had to do Rollercoaster Tycoon 2 for Atari. He then went on to Locomotion and finished it, and who knows what he is working on now. Its a lot of work for one man to code a complete game with only the help of Simon Foster and a music guy. So it obviously feels like he doesn't care, but that may not be true. This is no excuse for putting for time into the game or even hiring testers, CS said himself he didn't play the game much.

But anyway, this is a cool train, and I will be using it in all the games I play from now on.

That says it all for me: if he doesn't play his own game 'much', he doesn't care. I don't expect 100% support or feedback, but I do expect the product he releases at full price (which I paid, right when it was released) to be actually finished and to a good standard.

So much about the game feels like the neglected half-finished old forgotten project that it is. As much as I've tried to like Lomo, I simply cannot say it is worthy of being a sequel to Transport Tycoon, or of being worthy of the legacy and reputation CS earned with TT, TTD and RCT. How is it those three games could be so utterly flawless and brilliant, but Lomo the opposite, unless he stopped caring?

Well, back on topic, the Shinkansen is great. Although the scenario for it is super-easy (I beat it in 3 years and 1 month. The AI is really dumb, so I built an express line right next to one of their freight lines to rub it in), it's a great train.

A had a few screenshots, but I can't seem to find them.

i have also played this scenario, but i am 5th from top at the moment after 5 years...

mb cause i have like 3 trains only and 6 trams

however the top computer guy is a tycoon already with 100% performance index

plus you cannot breath fresh air anymore or see where the sun is due to so many f airports and planes roaming around!!

(and I built most of my trains underground to preserve the environment..._

My advice:

Don't bother preserving the environment. Too costly.

The first thing you should build is a train. Don't worry if you need a loan: the train practically pays for itself.

Build trains and trams from/to the biggest cities.

Good luck.

To preserve the environment? From what? The Shinkansen is electric. What I don't like is that I couldn't fix the "breakdown". For some reason Locotool won't read the Shinkansen dat files. And, as others have said, it seems like the AI players just build airports all over the place, which would probably be the best reason to put the trains underground anyway.
Take a look at the trains, planes, buses, trams and ships at
