Okay this sounds more like a tutorial title but it isn't so you should put like I want to start making vehicles.
Image I like Articulated Buses or Streetcars (Although I really like anything with wheels including planes, Thanks to Seelenquell for making Toronto's ALRV and CLRV for Locomotion. All we need now is a TTC D40LF and D60LF to go with the LRVs. Plus the Scarborough RT vehicles too.)
Resion for the LRV's is to make a good alternative to buses. Visit Here for more info.

Yah, sorry, I couldn't think of a title. I also figured this was the best place to put this topic because all the modders hang around here so....

I didn't see anything using the search function, but I'll look again just for good measure.

Another thing is getting stuff into .DAT's, does the Vehicle creator do that, because I haven't been able to acces a .DAT through any programs. So If anyone could also point me in the right direction to acess .DAT's that aren't in Binary.... I would appriciate it.

they are all binary..... i do have a team of trained monkeys with crayons and an abicus if you want to rent them....

otherwise search..look... read... took me about 2 days from start finnish on how to make a model just reading the forums... then again i am still learning and teaching others from my mistakes... the hard part is making the model from scratch...
North American sets and then some...

That's what I want to do. And btw plastikman, I love your vehicle packs.

What I meant (sorry for the bad wording  ) was that are there any programs that can translate binary into english, apart from you're monkeys. Could you clue me in on where to find them? Monkey's I mean. Oh, what are your rental charges?

Hi Locoplayer,

Glad to see someone else who wants to add stuff. I won't go into any detail in this post, as the most important instructions you need are already in this forum, but hopefully I will gve you a few pointers for the sort of things that you should search for.

1) Create your model in the 3d app of your choice - the only stipulation is that it needs to be able to produce a series of images (sprites) from different angles.

2) Put these images through a converter - locomotion uses png files with a 256-colour fixed palette.

3) Generate the xml that you need. This contains the information (speed, costs, etc.) that is required for the object. The best programme for this is vehicle creator.

4) Put the xml file through LocoTool to produce a dat file.

5) Copy the dat to your objdata directory and then create or edit a scenario so that you can select the object.

Hopefully, this will help you to search within this forum and find the info that you need. Another good resource is the wiki, which is stickied at the top of the forum.

I looked through the wiki, and didn't really find anything about making vehicles, but I probably overlooked something.

Also, has anyone heard of Z-modeler (or however you spell it)? Is it a good program? I downloaded it, to try and create a vehicle for another game I was playing, but never got around to using it. Another program I was looking at was blender? I think.

I'll also refine my searches and search the forums a few more times, for any more info I might need.

EDIT: Thanks to Barry for the help
