Indeed, after the double triple headers this season, I was kind of happy not having a race weekend. Problem is also that while the midfield is exciting, the front is almost lacking any excitement, it only becomes interesting if Hamilton screws up and gets a penalty to take him out of contention.

If you consider P4 first place, F1 is healthier than ever.

Absolutely horrid accident. I've never seen a car do that. It just... erupted. Exploded. Seeing him struggle to get out of his car, and them climb through the flames... Iconic, but awful, images all at the same time. He shouldn't have lived, yet he did. The halo both cleared the armco barrier from his head, and built a gap big enough for him to escape through. Crashing at 51g, and having the presence of mind to even undo your seatbelt is beyond me. Let alone climb out of the burning wreck and escape like he did. The medical car, with Dr. Roberts and van der Merwe, were instrumental in helping him get out so fast. Brilliant work in what must have been an absolute shock to arrive to.

I screamed at the TV and my wife got upset with me for shouting. When she saw the replays later, she rather felt like I did not scream enough.

This, from 77 seconds, shows Grosjean trying to climb out and finally succeeding. He was engulfed in flames for about 28 or so seconds.

The grid is pretty much complete for 2021. Perez was just confirmed for Red Bull!

I'll be honest, I wasn't expecting that. I like it, though. After how Racing Point treated Perez, I'm happy to see him move up the grid instead!

The final grid, then. We can safely assume Hamilton will extend his deal with Mercedes.

First quali of the year is over, and it's NOT Lewis - or even Mercedes on pole. It's Red Bull! Meaning, of course, Max Verstappen.

There's a lot to dig into but frankly I think at this point everyone's just enjoying the idea of a proper title fight that's not between teammates.

Really bummed about the Monaco GP. Leclerc on pole, actual pole position, with a Ferrari at Monaco. Then failed to even start the race.

Still, exciting to see Lando and Carlos together on the podium. With Verstappen winning ahead of Carlos and Lando, this was the 2nd youngest podium ever behind the Verstappen-Gasly-Sainz podium of Brazil 2019.

Well, here is the 2022 grid. Zhou has opted for 24 in his debut season for Alfa Romeo, and Max has confirmed his intention to use the number 1 offered to him as World Champion.

Mercedes has another 24 or so hours to file their official appeal, before results are verified and Max really is confirmed as the champion. Most experts in sports law seem to believe that Mercedes would have a very strong case if they were to appeal, but it remains to be seen whether they take the high road of saving the sport from further controversy, or if they push on for what they believe is fair and correct.

Regardless of team affiliation (I'm a Ferrari boy!), we can agree that the FIA with Michael Masi have acted all season long to keep this battle close in the interests of "the show". Keeping it tight has been more important than keeping it fair, and both have teams have been on the receiving end of really strange decisions. Mercedes fans feel robbed, but Red Bull fans do too. That's not healthy.

Then again, if new fans want WWE wrestling over Olympic wrestling, that's where F1 should go. It's not to my liking, but it is what it is.

A bunch of buddies and myself rate every driver's performance in the races. For 2021, we got this result:

Code: Select all

Pos. Driver Average Diff. to Leader Last Year's Rating
 01. Max Verstappen 8.829 +3 (4th)
 02. Lando Norris 8.474 -0.355 +3 (5th)
 03. Lewis Hamilton 7.829 -0.999 -2 (1st)
 04. Charles Leclerc 7.676 -1.153 +7 (11th)
 05. Carlos Sainz, Jr. 7.366 -1.463 -3 (2nd)
 06. Pierre Gasly 7.294 -1.534 +1 (7th)
 07. George Russell 7.171 -1.658 +1 (8th)
 08. Sergio Pérez 7.000 -1.829 -5 (3rd)
 09. Fernando Alonso 6.951 -1.877 N/A
 10. Daniel Ricciardo 6.725 -2.104 -4 (6th)
 11. Esteban Ocon 6.462 -2.367 +1 (12th)
 12. Sebastian Vettel 6.268 -2.560 +5 (17th)
 13. Lance Stroll 6.098 -2.731 -3 (10th)
 14. Kimi Räikkönen 5.974 -2.854 -5 (9th)
 15. Mick Schumacher 5.878 -2.951 N/A
 16. Yuki Tsunoda 5.833 -2.995 N/A
 17. Antonio Giovinazzi 5.829 -2.999 +3 (20th)
 18. Valtteri Bottas 5.732 -3.097 -5 (13th)
 19. Nicholas Latifi 5.293 -3.536 +0 (19th)
 20. Nikita Mazepin 3.324 -5.504 N/A
Now personally I don't fully agree with this. Ricciardo and Perez is too high, Bottas too low, Schumacher perhaps too low also. And Hamilton should definitely be ahead of Norris. Still, at least Mazepin is dead last.
