Newbie Firs Issue

Post by philabos »

I am trying to understand how FIRS really works. I can get the first part of the supply chain going, wood from forest to sawmill for example. I can transport wood until the cows come home and the sawmill never has any lumber to ship to furniture factory. I have tried ECS and have faced the same issue so obviously missing some basic understanding.
Thanks for any advice.

It sounds somewhat like this, but I may be wrong.
A copy of your game's save file would tell us more what's happening.

As a general recommendation to starting to use FIRS, before you start a new game, open the parameter settings of FIRS, and select a basic climate economy (eg "basic temperate" if you play the temperate climate). That dramatically reduces the number of industries, so you get less lost.
Being a retired OpenTTD developer does not mean I know what I am doing.

I just read the "this" message.
I think I made an honest attempt to explain what is happening.
Given this response my best option would appear to be "uninstall"
Thanks anyway.

If you upload your savegame, somebody can actually take a look at what's happening and provide you advice. Perhaps even the author of FIRS himself.

Sylf's does seem like a pretty useless response. :?

If you really are delivering wood to the sawmill (and it's not piling up on the station/circling around on trains - remember that not necessarily all tiles of an industry accept cargo) it's probably a bug. In that case, a savegame is almost certainly needed to determine exactly what's wrong.

Just to check something, you do have a vehicle trying to load timber at the sawmill yes? Just with OpenTTD, by default, an industry won't supply goods to a station until a vehicle refitted to carry that cargo attempts to load there.

Here is an example saved game. Supplying wood to sawmill which is producing lumber but not loading in rail cars destined to a furniture factory.
Using FIRS and NAR trainset 2.5

Sorry if my tone didn't come across right in my last post.

Anyway.
In this case, the biggest problem is the train2 not being refit to the proper cargo. Send that to depot, and refit the train so it can carry lumber.

Sylf, I tried your solution and it worked fine.
My mistake was that I assumed since the 50ft flat car could carry both wood and lumber it did not require a depot refit.
Since I was getting nowhere with both ECS and FIRS, I knew I must have had a very basic misunderstanding on how the system worked.
Many thanks for your help. :D

See also the 'refit in station' option in the orders - but that won't work for the first train visiting, since it'll only refit if there's already cargo of the given type waiting, and none will be supplied until a suitably-refitted train arrives... :(

Although Cargodist's behaviour got improved slightly, OTTD's handling of station-refit orders is still rather flaky IME.

Er, no... "Refit to any available cargo" won't work for the first train, but "Refit to <specific cargo>" will always work.
