OpenTTD Windows 7 x64 graphics problem
Hey guys!
I' downloaded OpenTTD yesterday and installed it. It all runs smooth at 1920x1080 but after some minutes of gameplay all the colors mess up for some reason. I'm running the game (x64 version) on Windows 7 Ultimate x64. Maybe it is because of the resolution but I do not think so. If you have any ideea or have ever encountered this problem, please post here a solution. Any help is appreciated!

Re: OpenTTD Windows 7 x64 graphics problem
Would you mind taking a screenshot of it?
Re: OpenTTD Windows 7 x64 graphics problem
Don't play full-screen or disable the automatic changing of the desktop background. The latter is causing your problems, but playing the game in a window prevents it from happening.
Re: OpenTTD Windows 7 x64 graphics problem
@Echo51: Let me see if the bug still occurs if I do what FooBar said and if it does I will post a screenshot.
@FooBar: Thank you! I really hope that helps. I was using the slideshow option indeed. I'll try disabling it and I'll tell if it worked.

Thank you, FooBar! That really worked (or at least that's what I think since I've played the game for a while with no problems).
Re: OpenTTD Windows 7 x64 graphics problem
Slightly related note since I'm also on Windows 7 x64, my game fails to go full-screen whenever I hit the button. It brings up an error message and carries on in a window. I don't mind since I prefer Windowed mode by far, but I was curious to know what might cause it to fail. Probably just graphic drivers.

Nice that you also share the exact details of the error message with us...SilPho wrote:Slightly related note since I'm also on Windows 7 x64, my game fails to go full-screen whenever I hit the button. /darkens the room and takes cristal ball.
I see , I see ...
I see a red warning text box spelling "Fullscreen mode failed".
I see "other" as screen resolution in "Game Options".
I see SilPho unmaximising the window and selecting a resolution other than "other".(*)(**)(***)(****)
I see SilPho hitting the fullscreen button and the message no longer appearing.
/puts away the cristal ball and agrees with planetmaker that providing more(exact) info is helpful in finding solutions.
(*) You want to choose a resolution that is supported by your monitor to prevent damage to your monitor.
(**) Linux binaries do not have a maximise button nor do they let you resize by dragging the corner of the window. Also other is not possible by changing openttd.cfg as on startup it reverts to the closest available resolution to what you have tried to set.
(***) If I select a resolution smaller than my desktop (windows binary on linux) I find all windows that were open closed when returning from fullscreen. I do not know if this happens on windows too.
(****) If I select a resolution bigger than my desktop (linux binary) I find my desktop messed up when returning from fullscreen. (Refresh is extremely slow.). I do not know if this happens on windows too.

Fulscreen mode only supports native resolutions.SilPho wrote: I was curious to know what might cause it to fail. Probably just graphic drivers.

I do not know if there are other reasons why fullscreen could fail. (read: I have not yet encountered any.)
If there are no other maybe the error message could be changed to "Fulscreen mode failed. Please select a native resolution in Game Options and try again."
If the window is maximised it will not resize anyway so I do not think it should include "unmaximize the OpenTTD window".
SilPho was not the first with this "problem" and probably will not be the last neither.

the same issues with the screen colors distorting at random intervals.
My own "fix" has been to pause the game, alt+tab back to the desktop, then alt+tab back to
the game. The colors return to normal and I continue playing until it happens again in about
30 minutes or so.
(It's hard to keep track of "real" time when playing, LOL.)
Re: OpenTTD Windows 7 x64 graphics problem
Oh, I see this thread doesn't have the answer yet. From "known-bugs.txt":
In Windows 7 the background slideshow corrupts the colour mapping of OpenTTD's 8bpp screen modes. Workarounds for this are:
a) Switching to windowed mode, instead of fullscreen
b) Switching off background slideshow
c) Setting up the 32bpp-anim or 32bpp-optimized blitter

Re: OpenTTD Windows 7 x64 graphics problem
I was going to make a post about me having a similar problem for playing OTTD in fullscreen, but seems I found the solution. Since I couldn't find any mention of what I did as a workaround on these forums, I thought I might as well share the solution with others.
I just recently bought a new computer, with Windows 7 Pro 64-bit and a 1920x1080 monitor. Whenever I changed the game resolution to one of OTTD's defaults, upon clicking the "fullscreen" box, the monitor would go black for longer than usual, flashed very quickly the game window with completely distorted colors for about a quarter-second, then minimized itself, showing the desktop. OTTD sounds were still playing. No errors popped up at all. Attempting to maximize the window again caused the screen to cut to black again, then return to the desktop. Couldn't even right click on its icon, or it would do the same minimizing thing again; ended up having to kill the game using Task Manager.
Disabling the desktop background slide show didn't seem to help. However, this worked for me: it may also be necessary to completely disable Windows Aero by switching to either the Windows 7 Basic or Windows Classic theme.
