in this thread i am building Canadian National Railroads Yellow Head Mountain Pass, there is A LOT of work to be done. In this thread i will post images of step by step building of this map, then the final product. input from anyone is welcome.

here is a little history about the pass from wiki.com:

Yellowhead Pass (el. 1110 m.) is a mountain pass across the Continental Divide of the Canadian Rockies. It is located on the border between the Canadian provinces of Alberta and British Columbia, and lies within Jasper National Park and Mount Robson Provincial Park.

Due to its modest elevation and gradual approaches the Grand Trunk Pacific and Canadian Northern Railways both built their mainlines through the pass circa 1910-1913. It had been previously recommended by Sir Sanford Fleming as a potential pass across the Rocky Mountains for the earlier Canadian Pacific Railway. This proposal was rejected, largely for political considerations, in favour of a more direct and southerly route through the more difficult Kicking Horse Pass.

It is believed that the pass is named for Pierre Bostonais (nicknamed Tête Jaune, French for Yellow Head), an Iroquois-Métis trapper employed as a guide by the Hudson's Bay Company. Bostonais led one of the first expeditions for the company to the interior of B.C. through the pass in 1820. Although the Grand Trunk Pacific and Canadian Northern Railways are both now defunct, the successor Canadian National Railway still runs its mainline here. The pass is now also traversed by the Yellowhead Highway.

i started building the map here at Jasper, then worked west. what needs work here, well the river is too straight and needs more curves in it to make look more real:

Image

building the ground around the yellow head lake. one side has natural curves to the shore line due to no tracks, one side has the straight look due to the tracks. still got to add some more curves or have the track snake a little bit more:

Image

where future mountains will split the map in half:

okay this is one of the open valleys in the pass, few things are wrong in this image.

1. river is two straight, needs more curves.
2. the track was gonna follow the river, which makes that to straight as well. gonna have to snake the river and probably have the track cross the river half way down the valley to add more curves to it.

Image

this where you enter the pass and jasper, the river once again is too straight, and need to be fixed. here is some random pics of japser, there is about a 10 track yard there, and a small town. reason why i left som much room in that area. for a passenger station and yard. I wish i could make my mountains look like that with the grey peaks. the mountains you see in the photo's are the ones along the edge behind jasper on the map.

this is how the valley looks, pretty much flat, and heavily populated with trees. but if i made the valley with that many trees be hard to build in it.

after taking some advice from plastik on how to make the pass look, i did the appropriate chnges it look 100% better. a few corners still need work to make it easier for people to lay track, likethe diagonal corners (i hate them), but doing these beta testing flushes out the problems:

middle of the mountain valley, needs a little more vegetation and weeds added to it, to really make it stand out, but the curving really makes it look better.

entering jasper from the pass, more work needs to be done to this area:

after doing some work to the map yesterday we almost got the pass built to moose lake another very large lake in the pass. 2 tunnels and 2 bridges where built. also the pass horseshoes back onto itself to help with the climb, really the only hard climb in the pass. still more corners need work, trying to get the pass down where you can lay a double track and not once use your bulldoze option.

here is one of the bridges as yo can notice the spacing is off, making the bridge imcomplete, and it just looks bad:

here is the bridge spacing probably done:

there is an third lake and its on the other side of jasper, something i still have to put in, not a very large lake, but a nice one still:

Image

http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.p ... 49&nseq=24

i might open up some of the pass areas more, due to the fact that this pass is a wide open pass example:

Image

http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.p ... 44&nseq=45

i need to add one more tunnel, but the funny thing is only one track goes in the other goes around it:
