I'd vote for Red Stars locks, they look very nice and have detail, zephyris are a bit boring to look at.
And i'd vote for a combination of Red Stars and Zephyris Docks, i guess Zephyris one as base with some of the stuff from Red Star's one on top of it would look awesome!

How does Red Star's dock look when a ship is docking? IIRC, ships have always overlapped with docks in a weird way - if the dock was bigger than normal, I fear this effect getting even worse.

<Lakie> Well, they do the same thing but the code is different.

I think Zephyris' docks and locks are a bit more 'vanilla' and so fit with better with OpenGFX. Red*Star's are really beautiful though and if they were released in a separate GRF I'm sure loads of people would use them, me included. :D

I 'd go for full tile docks. Just to be ready whenever NewPorts finish and make it into trunk. And docks without traffic lights are a bit odd. Unless we speak about 1930's.

Ooh... I never thought that I would arise such a controversal discussion with the *ocks problem

Okay, just my two cents: Concerning the docks I think this

and this

point is quite important.

Concerning the locks AND the docks I would agree that a combination of both variants would be nice - but: Who is willing to draw them? Maybe I have some time left next week, but since I've made the experience in the past that whatever I'm painting is maybe pretty, but mostly not in TTD style :| , I don't think that it's a good idea if I make the finalisation of the *ocks. So everybody else who wants to help is welcome.

I believe I already offered to draw a combination of both as soon as I've fixed my computer issues. I'm working on that right now to get me windows set up and all. Afther that, there's a backup which needs to be restored. I should be able to come up with something somewhere next week.

How's this for the docks?

These nicely connect to the OpenGFX roads, share the OpenGFX style while maintaining Red*Star's originality. At least, that's how I'd describe them.

I see that I have to add some shadows here and there...
Anyways, what do you think of these?

Love them . Use Zeph's wall sides and we are done. I love how it connects to roads. How does it look with different road sets?

Actually, I wanted to stick to these wall sides... :|
Below's a screenshot of the locks and docks in all four directions.
CommanderZ wrote:How does it look with different road sets?
Well, different ;) But not too bad actually.

Those road sets will have to support OpenGFX anyways in the near future; so if the authors of those sets like, they can put new tarmac on the docks as well.

/me too because if you change it to the old wall style you also have to change the walls of the locks, I think.

A suggestion (something I already wanted to do): What about making my initially much too bright lamps a little bit darker?

The road connection looks really great, but... erm, now it looks like the street is going downhill :/

Apart of that: I like them :)

Or actually, thank yourself, because I just tweaked your creation a bit :D
Red*Star wrote:looks like the street is going downhill
Yeah, I noticed that too. Dunno how to fix that. Swapping the bend to the other side of the dock most likely results in the illusion that the road goes uphill...
Red*Star wrote:What about making my initially much too bright lamps a little bit darker?
I'll have a look into that. We also still need streetlights for the ...errr... streets. Also the/my truck stops feature lampposts. It's probably wise to use the same style for all three features.

Maybe you could let the street go straight (instead of the bending) and make it going narrow when passing the rails of the crane?

I agree. Feel free to completely replace my lights to match the global streetlight scheme (*when* it has been created).

If you let the white lines continue through the bend it might help our brains to see the curve...
Or you could let the road fan out to both sides (red area in picture below)

It might also help if you shrink the crane area two pixels, the road will be almost straight then.

But the street should go downhill! TTD coast is steep not smooth.

Although I really would like to believe you (as that would save me some trouble), consider this:
There's a 1 tile height difference between water level and land. There's a one tile height difference between water level and dock surface. Given those two facts, the dock should be completely level, not downhill.

Anyways, I have some options now to go through. At least one of them should fix the downhill thing I think. Stay where you are. Don't move. I'll be back

I second this suggestion - there's no reason the whole road has to go right to the end of the docks. Make the actual road end near the beginning of the docs, and have an "access" (ie. narrower) road continuing along the length perhaps?

I'd like to repeat my concern that the docks themselves seem too low in the water for the top to be considered flush with the ground. Though maybe it's the wobbly street that's making me think that now. :)

The height difference between two tiles is 8 pixels. The height of the dock is seven. Increasing that by one wouldn't hurt IMO.

Also, having a narrow road isn't too bad of an idea actually. I somehow forgot that these dock also need to be used for passengers, not only cargo. With a narrow road, I can put a sidewalk on the other side, which makes the dock suitable for both: cargo at one side, passengers at the other.

How's this? It doesn't have any details like the containers, crates and lightposts on it yet, but the weird slope is gone!

nice! what about a little house for a porter and a gate at the point where the road gets narrower?

edit: made a little mockup - something like this, only in "proper"? ;)
