The first would be wonderful, but I'm you can tell from the tone of the question that I'd be dead against the second. In particular, the first option would hopefully let you have rail coming in at an angle, and you could presumably place signals and stuff, or convert the track to monorail later on, and things like that.
All of that would require to make graphics change according to the rails/signals, provided by the player. That would be too much work. So, most likely it would simply be electrified (or even not electrified) rails and nothing more. In case it would be ever done
For now it would be a simple eye-candy stuff for things like this

Sorry, what do you mean with "abandoned"? "off during winter"? It is snowed in winter and not snowed in summer (above/below snow line to be exact).

One (not too difficult) solution to this could be if you provide specific sprites which could be used as part of a station set. The station set could then detect the presence of a nearby industry and thus show the proper tiles (each industry with its own station sprites).

(Maybe sweettalk andy and / or Yexo to include such tiles into CHIPS)

I don't think a station set can detect the type of industry.

I don't think that either; it'd require one station tile per industry.

I'm adding missing cargo sprites to OpenGFX+ Road Vehicles right now and one of the cargos I'm missing is Oil Seeds. Which colour should I use for them?

it just looks like there is (was) no movement on the snow (like vehicles/cars snow tracks etc) ... so it looks like industry is off

oh yes. Now it looks indeed much better in winter as if people work there and not as if they're on holiday :-) I really like that mine - one of the best mines I've seen in TTD so far.
