Potential TT-Forums Meets of 2010 (UK and USA/Canada)

Montréal drivers are notoriously insane!
The reason Formula 1 pulled out of Montréal was not because of the money or sponsorships.
That was just an excuse to cover their tracks.
The real reason was that the Formula 1 drivers couldn't keep up with the average Montréal drivers and their bouts of insanity!

And no, we are not bad drivers. We just love to push bad drivers off the road once in a while. Crazy ontarians... driving like snails...

I would say that there is definitely a no under-16 policy at the meet. For those aged 16/17, it is something that might be considered depending on various factors, but don't get your hopes up too much. It really depends on how responsible and well-behaved you're going to be. Officially, I would prefer it if people attending the meet were 18 or over. (This goes for meets organised by myself at least.)

One: I am on the west coast, so Chicago is tough. Consider Seattle, it's really pretty! Any other left coasters?
Two: If we meet at a pub it's going to be 21+ yrs old by U.S. law.

Ah, yes, this is the confusion about having two different meets in the one thread - if we meet in a pub, then it would of course be 21 in the US. I'll probably start new topics for each meet sometime soon.

The main problem I can forsee with countrywide meets is that in most other countries, the population of TT-F users is far more dispersed than in the UK, and in the end, not every user will want to/be able to come to the meet. The UK is also endowed with one of the highest population densities in the world and a fine rail system allowing travel up to 300 miles for a day trip (as Brianetta did from Newcastle). There must be hundreds of TT-F users in the UK but in the end, only about a dozen were able to come.

As such, although we do have a large number of US users, the sheer scale of dispersal would probably make it difficult for an affordable meet. I'd suggest planning state-wide meets unless people are willing to travel any further distance .

Also a hint - planning a meet in a major tourist destination such as New York or LA may encourage Americans from further away to attend as a part of a short holiday, as we saw with quite a few people from the Dutchlands and Germany attending the London meet. Or perhaps planning some touristy activities over a number of days with fellow TT-F people?

It was always going to be quite different organising a US meet to a UK one, due to the size of it, of course. There does seem to be a fair bit of demand for a meet though. But I think "regional" meets in the US might be a bit more sensible than specifically state-wide ones - after all, many of the states are (by American standards) pretty close together, and perfectly doable in a weekend trip or whatever. Anyway, it seems that Chicago at least does seem to be a popular choice, and it is also a reasonably major tourist destination in itself, of course. As I say, sometime in the near future, I'll start some separate threads for the specific meets and we can work things out a bit more.

Indeed, I think beeb travelled quite a long way as well, that's why he wanted to leave early to catch an earlier train. He got it for free or something though *grumble*

I believe it's because beeb's father is a train driver for Northern or something of the like - and as such the privileges extend over to the family.

Can I ask why Edinburgh?

You've only got till Spring 2011 before the current Transport Museum in Glasgow closes its door and moves onto the Riverside Museum.

Or perhaps the way to look at it in 2011 the meet should be in Glasgow at the new Museum!

It was originally Edinburgh as I was slowly migrating the meet that way... you never know - in 2012 I might do a London meet...

Wait, I was in Canada last month. I found that you actually need to be braver to get into the US than to get into Canada...

US Customs:
- Run a background check on you before you even arrive
- Take your finger prints when you arrive
- Take your photograph
- Run yet another background check
- Then put a stamp in your passport

Canada Customs:
- Look at your face
- Ask if your French is any good
- Then put a stamp in your passport and you're all set
