A quote.. on agreeing to avoid personal pronouns and use Imperativ instead?
Well, basically first two pages of this thread..
or these posts, to be more precise:

(well, it's not an agreement amongst the majority of us, but nobody disagreed either...)

Hm... yeah. I wished all translators would drop by this thread occasionally.

I'll remember that then :)

I agree. I well remember the referenced posts, and indeed, I´m still finding a lot of "personal pronouns" (explicit and "implicit") when browsing the german language file. Some of them seem to be even new ones. And even a "Du" can still be found as well.

Pity that it´s such a large file ...

the translation of the download window is really horrible imho, some translators should proofread that one time...

but this one struck me as seriously wrong:
STR_CONTENT_DETAIL_UPDATE :{SILVER}Das ist ein Ersatz für ein existiernde/s {STRING}
why do we have a fully functional gender system if nobody uses it?

i have prepared a patch that should improve this:

Eddi: nice work. The lines around those you changed gave me the impression of also needing some love, though...

Seems we are using "Inhalt"/"Inhalte" as translation for "content", hm? Bit funny, but I can't think of anything better to use...
Anyway, if we're sticking with "Inhalt", I propose the following changes (taken from the .diff around Eddi's changes):

Code: Select all

- STR_CONTENT_NO_ZLIB_SUB :{WHITE}... herunterladen des Inhalts nicht möglich!
+ STR_CONTENT_NO_ZLIB_SUB :{WHITE}... herunterladen von Inhalten nicht möglich!

- STR_CONTENT_TITLE :{WHITE}Herunterladen von Inhalt
+ STR_CONTENT_TITLE :{WHITE}Herunterladen von Inhalten

- STR_CONTENT_DETAIL_SUBTITLE_AUTOSELECTED :{SILVER}Diese Abhängigkeit wurde zum Herunterladen ausgewählt
+ STR_CONTENT_DETAIL_SUBTITLE_AUTOSELECTED :{SILVER}Dieser Inhalt wurde wegen Abhängigkeit zum Herunterladen ausgewählt

- STR_CONTENT_DETAIL_SUBTITLE_ALREADY_HERE :{SILVER}Sie haben das schon
+ STR_CONTENT_DETAIL_SUBTITLE_ALREADY_HERE :{SILVER}Dieser Inhalt wurde bereits heruntergeladen

- STR_CONTENT_DETAIL_SUBTITLE_DOES_NOT_EXIST :{SILVER}Der Inhalt ist unbekannt und kann nicht von OpenTTD heruntergeladen werden
+ STR_CONTENT_DETAIL_SUBTITLE_DOES_NOT_EXIST :{SILVER}Dieser Inhalt ist unbekannt und kann nicht von OpenTTD heruntergeladen werden
PS: I am not sure about the plural forms though. Do you think it's wrong? In english, it's uncountable, but in german I think we can and should treat it countable. i.e. one piece of content is "ein Inhalt", two pieces of content = "zwei Inhalte".
Or not?

Diese Abhängigkeit wurde zum Herunterladen ausgewählt
Dieser Inhalt wurde wegen Abhängigkeit zum Herunterladen ausgewählt

OMG. Does there exist an intensification?

This is just terrible. :|

So you think my suggestion is worse than the current string? Then please be constructive and suggest something better
I think my suggestion makes at least a bit more sense than what there is currently. I am aware that "wegen Abhängigkeit" does not sound good, but at least you're not downloading an "Abhängigkeit" anymore, which is just plain wrong. You are downloading a piece of content that another piece of content depends on.
So what would you write? "Dieser Inhalt wurde automatisch zum Herunterladen ausgewählt, da ein anderer Inhalt diesen benötigt."?

If it would´ve been that easy I´d have already replied in a "constructive" way.

Nevertheless, it is ugly. Even content == Inhalt sounds more and more weird to me[*] in this context ... I´ll have to think about it.

[*] I know what a CMS is.

How about "Paket" instead of "Inhalt"?

I actually like that more than "Inhalt" in this context... or maybe "Erweiterungen" - as it references to graphics and AIs which kind of broaden the game.

And heightmaps, etc. "Erweiterungen" sounds good.

Good point. Do you implement those changes? I saw with delight that you (now?) obviously are also a registered translator :)

Well, I added it in two places, maybe I missed a few :) I'm not completely happy with it, though, either. I guess it's one of the cases where there's no such thing as one translation.

Those were even wrong before the number of companies got increased, or it is my misunderstanding that Spieler should be translated as company and not as client (someone who has joined the MP game). If companies were meant it would've been incorrect too as a MP game with only 1 company happens too (e.g. openttdcoop).

Something we got on the translator email that you should discuss/fix.
Greetings,

I'm using the nightly build 15591. Some revisions ago, in line 171 in the German language file, a mistranslation was introduced. It says "Stadion" there, which means "arena" or "stadium" in English. However, the associated string in the English language file is "Woods". Thus, the German translation clearly doesn't fit.
I checked an older revision, it said "Waldfrieden" in that place, which is a valid translation. Other possible translations would be "Wald" (wood), "Wälder" (woods) or maybe "Waldrand" (woodside).

Regards,
Chris H.

I'll take the bashing for that change as I allow myself being talked into changing it...

Waldfrieden is indeed, though, a station name I haven't ever heard and it sounds rather funny to me.

Waldrand will it be until a better translation is agreed upon. That said, I changed a number of strings yesterday. Please report back, if something seems mis-translated or you find other oddities.

"Waldfrieden" is the name of a tram station in Plauen. (my grandmother lived there)
