What do you think about Weltkarte Höhenrelief?
Re: Germans: help translating...
Then name it "Weltkarte - Geländehöhe"michael blunck wrote:The map in question does explicitly show the terrain heights. So why don´t name it appropriately? "Gelände" doesn´t imply "height" necissarily.DonRazzi wrote:[...] What about „Weltkarte - Gelände“???

That's the best proposal IMO.ige wrote:What do you think about Weltkarte Höhenrelief?

Let´s summarise:
Weltkarte - Geländehöhen
Weltkarte - Höhendarstellung
Weltkarte - topografische Darstellung
Weltkarte - physisch
Weltkarte - Höhenrelief

I would prefer one of those two.

Re: Germans: help translating...
I don't really see why it's a bad thing to use an accurate "technical" term. There are plenty of railway specific terms used in the game. I bet there will not many correct answers if you go out to the streets and ask people what "Formsignale" are. Nevertheless it's just right to use the term in the game.michael blunck wrote:Mmh, these sound rather "technical". I´ve never heard one of these terms.LiOn wrote: Proper terms would be "Höhenplan" (contour map) or "Höhenschichten" (contour level)
"Relief" is wrong as well, I suppose. It is a 3D-term. Neither the game is 3D nor the map is 3D-shaded - it's only coloured in incremental layers."Höhenreliev"
So I would vote for "Höhendarstellung". Not very specific, but correct.
Re: Germans: help translating...
i'd prefer "Topographie" over "topographische Darstellung"... the other map views are also described by single nouns ("Industrien", "Vegetation", ...)
i'd also prefer using 'ph' instead of 'f' (new spelling allows both)

Re: Germans: help translating...
I agree with Eddie. There are scientific terms for such maps in German, which are „Physische Karte“ or „Topographische Karte“. People who know these terms will know what awaits them on the map and the ones who didn't know the right terms until then will learn a new nice word. Inventing new words (something which is very easy in German) only would cause trouble.

Re: Germans: help translating...
something that always bothered me, the word "Zentrum" appears twice in the station names.
one of them should be changed. while there, some of the names feel a little weird, maybe there should sometimes be more creative names, not simple translations.
Edit: the string was last changed in r2800:
Code: Select all
STR_SV_STNAME_CENTRAL :{STRING} Zentrum
STR_SV_STNAME_EXCHANGE :{STRING} Zentrum

Re: Germans: help translating...
Wasn't that something along the lines of "Umsteige" once? (or so I think) That sounds weird of course...
---
What kinds of stations in english speaking countries are named "exchange" in real life? I would guess that it means a station where several different lines join, so a lot of people switch from one line to another there...
So what to use in german now... "Umsteigebahnhof"? A bit long and still sounds not really well...
But that's the best I can think of... (or is another station name already translated with this?)

Re: Germans: help translating...
When I hear "exchange" in this context, I think a little station off the mainline for servicing a single town or industry. A place where many lines come together is a "transfer station" or a "hub".
This could be an Americanism, or even a DaleStanism.
Of course, you can't forget these gems. (Exchange Exchange FTW.)

Re: Germans: help translating...
Yes, "transfer" would be the better term for that kind of station.
Nevertheless, neither "Umsteige..." or something else in that special category would be used for a German station name.
I vaguely remember having posted (excerpts from) a DB station list to get more genuine name suffixes. Unfortunately I don´t remember where.
I´ll have a look.
[edit]
Found it. This is a list of real DB station name suffixes I collected some time ago:
West, Nord , Ost, Süd (west, north, east, south)
Altstadt (old part of town)
Dorf (village)
Flughafen (airport)
Hafen (harbour)
Hbf (main station)
Hp (stopover)
Markt (market)
Messe (exhibition centre)
Mitte (middle)
Mole (mole)
Ort (place)
Schloss (castle)
Schule (school)
Stadion (stadium)
Stadt (town)
Wald (woods)
Zentrum (centre)
Zoo (zoo)
[/edit]
regards
Michael

Re: Germans: help translating...
best is "topografische Weltkarte"
Re: Germans: help translating...
Hi,
I'd like to revive this topic because in the newest nightlies a number of German translations is missing, even some which existed before.
Is there anybody active in translations at the moment or are volunteers needed?

I guess there cannot be really too many. I also recently registered - which is quite easy. But I haven't got around to actually submit translations as I was busy with RL and some patchesRainer wrote:Is there anybody active in translations at the moment or are volunteers needed?r

So, please, Rainer, feel encouraged

Re: Germans: help translating...
i would get very suspicious if 19 was even.

Re: Germans: help translating...
just to let Ralph know why I reverted his change of my initial translation as I have IMO good reason to do so:
STR_LOCAL_AUTHORITY_REFUSES_NOISE
New: {WHITE}Die Stadtverwaltung von {TOWN} verweigert aus Lärmschutzgründen den Bau des Flughafens
IMO it has to be "des Flughafens" instead of "eines Flughafens" as only that particular airport cannot be build. Another one, at a different location (further out) or a smaller one might be an option. So it's not a general refusal to build airports, but a refusal to build this particular one.

Re: Germans: help translating...
Firstly, it has a spelling mistake. [please ignore if already corrected and I didn't notice]changeset r15276 wrote: +STR_BORDER_FREEFORM :{BLACK}Lanschaftsbau
Secondly, I don't think it fits well.
Thirdly, does that fit the button??
Of course, it is hard to translate something like "freeform". "Freiform" sounds very strange imo. But "Landschaftsbau" isn't the way to go either in my opinion, it gives a rather poor opposite to "Wasser".
Maybe not the best suggestion, but what about "Individuell"?
Please make other suggestions if you have..

I'd go with "beliebig" and changed it to it, though I'm not entirely happy with it either. But even in English I'd prefer "arbitrary" over freeform as it allows any type of border.Of course, it is hard to translate something like "freeform". "Freiform" sounds very strange imo. I changed that. Actually the latter to "Tunnel würde außerhalb der Karte enden"1) Landschaftsbau5.19 +STR_CONFIG_PATCHES_ENABLE_FREEFORM_EDGES :{LTBLUE}Landschafts-bau am Kartenrand erlauben: {ORANGE}{STRING}
