I think the best would be all of them (DBSet XL, US Set, UKRS, JRSet) combined. But that would need the cooperation of all the creators and people who would code them together.

The one that suits your needs perfectly. And no-one can answer for you that question. Only you can.

There really isn't any best. I have most of the sets downloaded and switch between them for different games, mostly early games as well as I like steam trains. I just wish that there could be some kind of late victorian GRF to play in the 19th century with...

I don't know of any late Victorian GRF, but for my own amusement, I've just finished fiddling using HxD to allow trains to start earlier (1850), and a few other changes to wagons, ships etc. - for Temperate only, and using ECS - but not fully tested yet.

A zip and my config file attached if you are interested

We have plans for taking NARS back to 1850, but we need certain improvements to newgrf first (such as being able to test the date before 1920...)

Currently the Canset goes back to 1910 and could theoretically go back farther.

I like UKRS for the fictional but still somewhat realistic trains it have. Seriously, I like it realistic... but I hate when new trains stop coming as soon you reach "today". :/ I remember using a such set, and I think I got bored by 2020.

I would love playing with sets that starts early. :) I do always start early as possible, which is most of the time 1920.*

*(Amusingly, I just checked in UKRS... if you start earlier than 1920 there are some steam engines available but liveries are missing :P)

Now I think on it, I would love seeing completely fictional train sets... heh.

Not 1910 ... From the user guide ...
A TTDPatch game (currently) cannot start earlier than 1st Jan 1921; however an OpenTTD game can be started much earlier. This set has the 4-6-0 'Ten Wheeler' steam engine designed in 1902 (narrow gauge) and 1908 (standard gauge) together with a set of passenger coaches and freight cars. The game will then make the 4-6-0 'Ten Wheeler' available within 2 years of the design year; or if you are lucky, you may get an invitation by the vehicle manufacturer to test a vehicle earlier.

Therefore, with the CanSet v0.3, starting an OpenTTD game as early as 1902 is an option.

A fun option as well, it makes starting early in CanSet quite interesting, as you sit trying to justify moving over to standard guage, or waiting out narrow guage as long as possible. I'm enjoying games with CanSet in OpenTTD on my little Nokia n810 immensely.

I personally like the UKRS

1) It has fairly good balance throughout the game, fast/powerful/expensive vs slow/weak/cheap, and has in any time frame a fairly good range of speeds and powers. Eg 3 locomotives of different powers, 5/6 different speed D/EMUs, several different strength steam trains
2) It's familiar - I know what sort of role HST/Voyager/Pendalino/Sprinter's are used for, so I can apply them in the best situations.

I prefer the UKRS because new trains keep on appearing after 2010, which is cool.

I once loved the DBSetXL and I still respect it to this day.
But my god Pikka did it with UKRS. It's just perfect IMO, good selection of engines and the most touching part of it for me are the sounds.
But currently as time passes by my own Lithuanian Transportation Set starts to take over a place in my heart.
I really want to complete it so that people could enjoy A LOT of soviet block vehicles. Becouse as far as I know there isn't any set that is based in this region and is completed.
Being based in eastern block the set will just feel different you know.

BTW one question of curiosity for you MB.
I know for a fact that M62 locomotives were imported to eastern Germany and did serve atleast a few years after unification.
Does your set include them and if it does then could you show me some sprites as i am VERY pleased with my own M62s and would like to have some comparison.

I've recently started using the 2cc set, and it's awesome. It has a very wide selection of engines, but yet is very well balanced.
