7) Back to the WCML. Heading up the North the next major station is Milton Keynes. The stopping services that work along the WCML terminate and originate here using the bay platforms (one of these is on view between some trees and heading under the viaduct). Express workings still continue North ontowards Nottingham or Bradford, but no stopping/local services use the WCML until Shevington (a long way up north from here) which means that north of Milton Keynes the line is only two tracks as opposed to four elsewhere. As well as WCML services the station is a terminus for local branchline services. The bridge is used by services heading towards Sheppton Mallet calling at Milton Keynes bridge and Basildon - this is worked by 3F029 and 3F030 (0-6-0 tank engines) - one of these is on view. The line that goes under and heads south is the line towards Ashford. This is worked by 4MT005 and 4MT006 (2 4-6-2 tank engines).

Nottingham has recentley been remodelled. (The original station is here). A new line (the Nottingham - Leeds line ) that links the WCML to the NCML at Leeds was recentley built which meant that Nottingham now has to handle through trains as well as Terminating express and local services. The Station is now on three levels with a grand total of 12 platforms (11 in use; one disused) and will shortly handle an extra ten 4-6-2 Streamliners (Nos. A4023 - A4032) that will work on the new line.

9) Brighouse. Main station is on the NCML whilst the new station out of town is on the new Nottingham - Leeds line. In the future the main station will handle North Coast Express services as well as the local services to Parkhouse and Selston which it currently handles.

And another 3.

10) First we head up to Leeds. In the Future the new trains that will work on the Nottingham/Leeds line will terminate here using the larger bay platform. NCML services call at Leeds and one of those trains working on the NCML is on view here. The low level platforms are used by local services between Parkhouse, Leeds, Brighouse and Selston.

11) This time we head west from Leeds along the NCML. The Town of Headingley was almost completely obliterated to make way for the railway. In order to allow this Local councillors demanded that a station be built and that it should be served by trains on the NCML. As a result the large station that is shown here was built. Intercity expresses mainly use the Through platforms (one is on show here waiting at the signals to the west), althogh two terminate in the Eastern bay platforms (one of those trains is on show.) The Western bays are used by local services to bradford and royston, 370025 (originally used on the WCML) is seen just departing the station.

12) Carlton. Next station west of Headingley and a junction between the mainline to Bradford and the branch line to Royston. The lines around the station are extremeley busy with both Express and local services using the two track line between Bradford and Headingley. A 2-6-4 tank engine (4MT0053 or 4MT0054) hauls a local service from Royston to headingley (platform 3), while a 4-4-0 express (370025) hauls a service from Bradford.

Glad you like them

I've left that game for a while and started a smaller one. I'm using UKRS and PBI.

First three are from 1929. The company has been able to expand a bit and has developed a passenger and freight network.

i) Bury. Where it all began. In 1929 the town had a major passennger terminus served mainly by 0-6-0 tank engines. These linked Bury with Motherwell to the west - a 0-4-0 tank engine is seen approaching the station having just dived under the line to Ince Blundell and turned back in towards Bury - Ince Blundell to the North East and wickham to the south east. Just out of view are the oil wells that produce the oil that is taken to Ince Blundell refinery.

ii) Ince Blundell. A small town on the line between Bury and Old Banstead. Not all passenger services call here, one such example on view is the 4-4-0 express steam train hauling the Banstead - Bury express. The town is mostly known for its oil refinery, with oil from both Maldon and Bury being coverted into plastic here. Oil arrives at Ince Blundell Central, while plastic is transported from Ince Blundell Woods station to the Factory at Banstead.

iii) Banstead. No trains on view here but the current station layout and surrounding lines are shown. At the moment the town sees a few passenger services working on the Old Kea to Reedham line as well as those on the Bury to Banstead line. Trains from the bury come from the single line to the west, meaning that they when arriving at Banstead they arrive from the North of the station, despite Bury actually being south of Banstead.

Next three from 1940.

iv) Banstead has grown a bit in the last 11 years. The passenger station was expanded to four platforms, while the line to Ince Blundell to the West of the town was doubled. On view here is a 2-6-4 Tank Engine hauling a mixed goods train to Old Kea and a 0-6-0 tank engine with a local service to either old Kea or Reedham.

v) Old Kea. A small railway town south of Banstead. Every week a mixed goods train calls at the station as well as the local services that run to Banstead and Reedham, also of note is the Coal train that passes through the town having just loaded up at Old Kea mines. This train will head south to join up with the freight line to Bury before reaching its destination - Wickham south power station.

vi) Nottingham. An empty milk (livestock) train passes through the town en route to Kings Lynn farm. The passenger station is on the crosscountry line from Maldon to Kings Lynn although it is ocassionally served by passenger trains from Banstead.

Two more different towns, from the 1966 era.

vii) Harpenden, the railway was mainly built here for freight traffic from bury farm to the Food Processing plant.; coal from just north of the town to Wickham and grain from Widness farm to Ashford Brewery - A class 25 hauls a grain train with the new generation of trucks - In the coming years all freight trains are being upgraded with new trucks and new trains at the helm (either a class 25 or 47).

The passenger station sees a service between Rushden and Widness ran by a class 20, a class D16/1 runs a service non stop to Bury along the South Coast line.

viii) Kessingland. A station that has been around for a while without a lot of change. It is the northern most station on the line that runs along the North Coast from Bury through the towns of Motherwell and Gretton. On show here is one of the DMUs that now work all local services on non electrified lines and a class 20 that works on the cross country route to Kings Lynn.

ix) Bury. The lines have changed significantly around the town since 1929. A new station serves the farm (this was originally on the other side of the line heading east), whilst Bury station has grown to accept more passenger trains and also a goods service from Kessingland. On show is a mix of the new locomotives being employed to work on the companies routes and an old steam pulled clay train pulling into the Depot to be scrapped and replaced by a 47.

The next three are still from 1966 but show how things have changed since the early years.

x) Banstead. Probably now the center of the companies operation. The station looked like this in '29* and this '40. The station has continued to grow and has now been electrified. The line that heads North East to Reedham has been made into a 4 track mainline to handle a mix of slow passenger + frieght and intercity express services. A new line to Compton has been opened to the East (not electrified). Some of the new AL1s are on show at Nottingham along with some of the 30+ years old freight trains. The factory at Banstead has increased production but the amount of trains serving it has been reduced as Plastic is now transported by road from Ince Blundell.

xi) Ince Blundell. A small amount of modification has occured since '29**. The line to the south was turned into a 4 track line, while the through lines through the town were doubled. Now that plastic is transported by road, the 'woods' station (which had been expanded to three platforms) was cut back to one.

xii) Old Kea. Here it is in 1940. The Station has grown and now handles AL1s on the line up to Banstead. Coal trains from the mines to wickham power station are now diverted around the town, meaning that only clay trains en route to Nottingham now travel through the town. Recentley a new steel mill station was opened (coal comes from the mines just outside of town, iron ore from Compton and Steel travels on its own line up to Banstead factory.

Here are three from a new game (The previous game got out of hand and crashed several times).

Early steam days and Whitecroft Transport Company are gradually building up a network of freight routes involving coal, grain and livestock and passenger routes to the towns near Whitecroft.

1) Whitecroft. Centre of it all. The passenger station links the town with Parbold - via a small branchline and then to several destinations along the Eastern Mainline. The stops on the line are Sweepstone, Kettering and Osbaldwick - although some trains branch off before Kettering to Neston. The line is heavily used by freight trains from Sunderland. Grain trains load up near sundeland and then unload at Whitecroft Valley (on view), while coal trains load up at either Sunderland mines or kettering mines before running into the sidings at Whitecroft Valley where they then reverse into the awkwardly sited Parbold Power station. In future years the line will be extended east of Whitecroft.

2) Swepstone. Small town east of Whitecroft. Currently only a few through services to Kettering stop here. The station is mainly used as a passing/overtaking point for fast trains and freight services. The Kettering - Whitecroft Express (A1001) has priority meaning that an empty coal train must wait in the sidings.

3) Kettering. Small town to the North, but well served by trains. It has an express link with Kettering, a branchline service to Neston and 370002 (on show) continues on towards Osbaldwick. 6F003 and 6F004 (seen departing) work on the coal route from Kettering mines to Parbold Power Station.

Some more screenshots.

My laptop is not useable at the moment so these three are from a different game.

1) Chatham. Home of Chatham rail, founded in the 1930s. Chatham is the centre of the company's operations with most passenger trains calling here. The station is on the mainline that runs from Grays (to North) to Leeds (in the south). Most services on the line call at the intermediate stations of Derby (between grays and Chatham) and Stixwould (between Chatham and Leeds). Just before Grays, some trains branch of the mainline towards Stanley on the hill station serving the small village of Stanley, whilst others continue on beyond Grays to the mining town of Rotherham.

On view here is no 570001 (platform 1) with a local service to Margate along the Chatham and Margate branchline. While 4MT001 pulls into Chatham with the local stopping service that runs between Derby and Stixwould.

Chatham Steelworks is also shown. This is the centre of the steel industry and a big money maker for an otherwise finacially strained company. Coal and Iron ore comes from Rotherham mines. 6F004 is just arriving at the steelworks with an iron ore load, while 6F007 approaches Chatham.

2) Leeds. Currently a terminus but as you can see work is underway on making it a through Station.

All trains that call here, terminate here. They run in into the sidings next to the red bridge (in the bottom lefthand corner) where they turn around, run into Leeds and head back up North. to the West of the station a new line is being constructed to link Leeds with Sandbach. In the future this will be extended east to a town called weybridge that currently has a small link to Margate, to form a crosscountry route.

Chatham rail has also started construction of the new station at the Food Processing plant. Trains will run in the next few months. Unfortunately they let some idiot egineer design the station which means that a bridge had to be constructed to the south so that trains can cross the down line of the mainline in order to reach the upline (Up is towards Chatham, down is away from Chatham)*.

* If you look at the station it probably would have been easier to make the trains loop in the other way or simply make it an end of the line station with buffers.

3) Map. Blue line is the planned crosscountry line, Red is where the mainline will go to.

On that note... I give you three more

4) Sandbach. Terminus for the crosscountry route that has now been extended beyond Leeds to Weybridge. Two 'standard five''s are on view in the platforms. 50002 loads up with passengers and mail while 50001 leaves the platform on the country side of the station in order to allow A1001 an Express service from Grays - Chatham - Sandbach to enter the station.

5) Weybridge. Currently only three trains use the station: 4MT002 is seen leaving with a margate bound service; 50001 is seen just arriving while 50002 is out of view. The location of the station meant that the cross country route must curve round the outskirts of the town in order to reach the station.

In the future Weybridge station will be at the centre of the Lyonshall & Weymouth mainline - a future project of the Chatham Rail Company.

6) Margate. Small town north of weybridge and east of Chatham. Despite only being a small station it is an important transfer point for passengers from Chatham travelling towards Weybridge as the current set up means there is no direct train service. As a result passengers must catch 570001 (the 0-6-0 pannier tank on view) from Chatham to Margate, where they must then catch the service to Weybridge hauled by 4MT002 ( a 4-6-2 Tank engine)

Here's three more from the same game, showing how things have changed over the last 10 years or so.

7) In the early 40s Chatham was revamped completely. Slow moving freight between the North and the steelworks was causing far too many delays. Because of this a relief line between Grays and Chatham was added. Chatham station also saw another platform added, while the Depot to East was moved to the West of the station between the passenger and freight lines. To access the Steelworks mineral trains now cross under the passenger lines so as to reduce the congestion south of Chatham station.

The abandoned depot can still be seen although it is now isolated from the mainline by the new Chatham Airport which offers flights to Salisbury and Brighouse (see the map above to see where they are )

A new line to a town called Garforth, west of Sandbach was created. To save trains operating on the line (which originate from Chatham) having to reverse after calling at Sandbach, a new station Sandbach west was added while the Junction between the two stations was modified. 4MT005 is seen here working a passenger only service between Chatham and Garforth.

9) On the Garforth line. 4MT005 heads to Sandbach at full pelt while 4MT006 peaking out from behind the trees waits for the signal to clear directly under the flight path from Brighouse to Chatham

10) Watford. South west of Leeds and near the final station on the Chatham Mainline (now fully completed). The town is mainly noteable for the Junction between the mainline to Chatham and the mainline along the West Coast. The small station is served by a local train running between Haywards Heath and Hayfield.

11) Map.

12) Larger overview of the main town of Chatham. A few modifications (including larger airport) and new additions (noteably the busses).

Presenting the Great Eastern Railway.
Despite being only a few years old a number of passenger routes have opened.

1) Lancaster. Growing railway town situated on the mainline from Oldham to Camberley. Local services that run from Sandford (operated by 2-6-4 Tank engines) terminate here, while express services reguarly call here.

2) Beverley. Only local trains call here, like 4MT002 on show here running a Sandford to Lancaster service. The station is also a junction for the line heading south east towards Beaconsfield.

3) Sandford. Major calling point on the mainline (the town is situated east of Lancaster). A 4-4-0 express runs an express towards Lancaster while a 2-6-4 tank engine loads up on platform 2.

4) Oldham Junction. To the east trains carry onto Watford High where they terminate, while to the west the line splits. One line branches off into the direction of Sandbach and Lancaster while the other branches offer to form the Beaconsfield - Telford - Horsley Cross line.

A 4-4-0 express, with a Cambereley to Watford High service (calling at Lancaster, Sandford and here) is seen departing the Station while A1001 speeds through with a service to Beeston calling at Beaconsfield only.

5) Beaconsfield. Main stopping point on the line from Oldham Junction to Horsley and also a major junction. A 4-6-2 tank engine is seen hauling a Lancaster to Beaconsfield service, while A1001 is seen picking up speed having just left Beaconsfield station.

6) Dorchester. Irregular stopping point and irregular station design. A1001 overtakes 4MT003 - the only train that currently calls at Dorchester - using the staggered passing line.

7) Sandford. Another shot. This time showing it with a bit more traffic and the new freight sidings to the north. 2-6-4 tank engines now work on the Leeds - Sandford (where trains then reverse) - Beaconsfield and beyond line.

A 0-6-0 tank engine is working a service via from Templeton general to Sandford via Beaconsfield, while other trains speed through in the direction of Beverley and Lancaster.

Templeton. South of Beaconsfield and served by trains from leeds. Templeton General is currently the terminus for the service from Sandford (calling at Beaconsfield) while Templeton is the main station for services between Leyland, Sandford and Leeds.

The power station is served by coal trains that come from the mining town of Leeds.

9) Leyland. South of Templeton and current terminus for trains from Leeds - however this is only a temporary arrangement. 4MT005 waits for 4MT006 to clear the Leyland viaduct before it continues its Journey to Leeds calling at: Templeton, Beaconsfield West, Sandford and LEEDS.

10) The Map so far

Three More

11) Watford High. Watford is the main terminus for all of the mainlines operated by GER. There are services to: Sandford, Lancaster and Camberley; Beaconsfield, Horsley Cross and Beeston; and services to Templeton and Reigate.

The current station has only just been refurbished. Two more platforms were added to cope with the extra trains that now operate on the Watford - Kidsgrove - Templeton - Reigate line. Station roofs were also added as the station became more popular with commuters.

On view here is 370001 a 4-4-0 express hauling a fast service from Camberley to Watford via Sandford.

12) Chester is a small town between Kidsgrove and Templeton. It is most noteable for the large viaducts to the east that allow trains to cross Chester Valley. Two local services to Reigate are seen on the slow lines. One is seen crossing the river while the other is loading up at Chester.

Avoiding lines around the town are provided for the Express services along this mainline. One is just on view at the exit of one of the steel viaducts to the north.

13) Reigate (main). The future will see Reigate become both a Terminus for local and express services from Watford as well as a through station for services heading further west. At the moment though it is only used as a Terminus. The Layout of the station is unusual as Through trains will predominantly use the third (covered) platform in both directions. On view here is a 4-4-0 express underneath the glass roof on Platform 2 (the second bay platform) having just arrived from Watford. Also seen here is 4MT006 approaching platform 1 with a Watford - Reigate stopping service.

14) Kidsgrove. Busy scene here recently after the station gained another platform. A new line now links the station with Norwich and another new line to Holmes Chapel and Winsford.

15) Norwich. New railway station currently used by only a few trains like the 2-6-4 Pacific on view here with a fast service to Winsford (calling at Norwich only). The future will see traffic from Penrith to Winsford services as well as a local service to Winsford which will operate out of the bay platform.

16) Penrith. South of Watford, this town was chosen as an alternative terminus to Watford High for the new services which will operate to Winsford along the Winsford Mainline. On view here is a new 4-4-0 express just leaving the Depot and heading for the terminus at Penrith.
