To start with i'll just show a few random screenshots from games that are long since forgotten.

The first three are all from the same game.

1)Area around Wigan. Wigan station is the busiest of the two, with express services and local services on lines to Peterborough and Morpeth calling here. Two 4-4-0 express steamers can be seen at the station. One a terminating service from Witney is seen reversing in the sidings, whilst the other a Peterbrough - Witney via wigan express leaves the station in the direction of Witney

2)Stixwould. To the north is the junction where the mainline to chigwell and beyond meets (at this time in the game) a small branch line to Roehampton. The bay platform at stixwould is currently used for the service to Leicester town (south of stixwould). A 0-6-0 pannier tank engine hauling four converted covered carriages carries out this task.

3)Leicester Town. The smaller of the two stations at Leicester and situated off the mainline to Witney. (the main station Leicester is just south of Leicester Junction). Here is a busy scene with all three engines that work on this branch line on show. In the bay platform is the stixwould - leicester town service. the other two engines originate from witney and travel further down the branch line. Both continue onto the small town of Bridgewater. Here one terminates, whilst the other continues to the tiny village of Abbotsbury. Sadly for locals, Abbotsbury and Leicester town stations were closed in later years while only an irregular service to Bridgewater (one DMU that originates half way over the other side of the map in Aldershot) was provided.

Three more... this time from a different game.

1) Ferryhill. Second station on the mainline from Cottesbrooke. An express service from the north loads up passengers on platform 3, before heading non stop to cottesbrooke. A DMU in the bay platforms is also on view. This works the Egham branch line providing a service for locals in the small towns of Reading and Egham. Also seen in view is the Goods yard at Ferryhill - a weekly goods brings Beer and Food from the nearby processing plants and brewery to the locals in ferryhill.

2) South of Ferryhill station. A class 20 hauls a rake of passenger coaches - heading for Houghton. While a class 47 hauls a rake of empty oil tankers back to the Oil wells at Gillingham.

3) Huxley Station. The terminus for local trains from the south and the north, whilst also a major stop for express services heading North. Freight trains, usually grain trains and oil trains, are diverted around the town.

Three more (from the same game)

4) Luton. An AEC diesel railcar heads further up North towards Warley. While a 4-4-0 express heads out of luton station onwards to its final destination - Lancaster. Lastly a 0-6-0 pannier tank heads south to Great Altcar and then onto Huxley.

5) Overview of Huxley some years on from the original pic in the first post. Two extra platforms were added to alleviate congestion around the station, while the whole station was electrified to handle the Class 86s that now operate the express services.. On view is a DMU waiting on platform 3; A class 20 hauling a passenger train in the direction of Ferryhill; and (if you look closely) a class 10 mail train is just arriving at plaform 1.

6) Houghton - South of Ferryhill. A 2-10-0 Freight Engine drags a rake of tankers from the Gillingham freight spur onto the main freight line, a local passenger train crosses over the main passenger line, heading to Gillingham, while lastly another 4-4-0 express hauled passenger train is just arriving on platform 2.

7) Last of the game described above. A shot from 1971 (when I stopped playing it). Bideford began as a small village connected to the mainline at Cottesbrooke by the Bideford & Gillingham branch line. On view is one of the three EMU's that operates on the line, two continue here to Bideford while another stops short and terminates at Gillingham. Also Bideford docks is shown - a passenger ferry terminal linking the town with Ferryhill.

1) Another game. Leeds central is the major station for the city of Leeds. In view are the through platforms for services non stop to Norwich (in the south) and non stop to Wednesbury or slow via Heanor to Wednesbury (in the North). Out of view are the bay platforms that serve villages to the south. A mail express can be seen heading into the station, whilst a Coal train (heading south to Selby Power Station) and an empty gravel train (heading north somewhere) use the avoiding lines.

2) Heanor. North of Leeds. Slow passenger and non-express Freight trains are diverted through Heanor, rather than taking the more direct route to Wednesbury, to improve the travelling times of express services between Leeds and Wednesbury. On view is an empty gravel train heading to the gravel works just north of Wednesbury.

3) Selby. A busy little section of the railway situated off the mainline from Leeds - Norwich. A coal train closes in on its destination - Selby power station, while a 4-4-0 Express passenger train departs from Selby with a local service to Leeds Central. Also in view are the wood loading platforms at Selby power station - wood is transported via Leeds, heanor and Wednesbury to the sawmill at waterlooville.

4) Wednesbury. Some express services from Norwich terminate whilst others continue north to Preston. Local services also serve the station - and on view is a stopping service to Norwich via Heanor. While passing through platform 3 is a lost gravel train that should be heading in the opposite direction, in order to drop of the materials needed to make bricks at Selby brickworks . (out of view in 3)

5) South of Heanor. The main junction between the direct line to Wednesbury (line under the bridge), the branch of to Heanor and the new railway line that heads west towards Wimbourne Master. On view are two passenger services heading for Heanor, a 0-6-0 Pannier Tank (on the bridge) hauling a passenger service from Wimbourne Master and a 4-4-0 express hauls a passenger service that originated from Norwich . The fomer runs into the sidngs at Heanor Station (not to be confused with the sidings on view here) where it turns round and begins heading back to Wimbourne Master; the latter continues on the line towards Wednesbury

Here's another 3 (from 3 different games)

Farnham) Overviw of Farnham. Main station in this game. A clay train deposits materials at the Brickworks at Farnham Freight Yard, a goods train approaches the Yard to load up with bricks that will be transported down south to Conventry. While another Goods train unloads goods at Farnham before heading back to the factories up north. Lastly, on view is a local passenger train heading to Soulbury - it will also make a call at Farnham North (just out of sight).

Nottingham) Station in my current game. A small town, but one with a very busy railway station. It is one of the two northern terminus' for A1 Pacifics that work intercity expresses on the Western Mainline - these use the four raised platforms closest to the town. Expresses that carry on up North use the diagonal lines right at the bottom of shot.

As well being the terminus to expresses, all local trains around the area originate and terminate at Nottingham. Services to Appeley Bridge use the single bay platform perpendicular to all the main platforms - one of the two 0-6-0 tank engines (3F024 and 3F025) is on view. The southern bay is used for services to Treviscoe, Huddersfield and Warrington. On show are two of the trains that make the trip to Treviscoe via Jarrow. The northern bays are used for services to Endmoor or Newborough via either: Reading and Sixpenny (two 0-6-0 tank engines work this route); or the fast line (worked by two 4-4-0 express steamers)

Huxley) Bigger overview of Huxley (see earlier posts). On view is a mix of steam, diesel and electric. Steam still works on freight and express passenger services with destinations currently not under the wires.

Here's another 3. These are from a small game from way back. The main town is Farnham (see the post by me before this).

1) Soulbury is a small village to the North East of Farnham. A 0-6-0 Pannier Tank works the local service from Hoddesdon to Farnham calling at Soulbury then Farnham North. Avoiding lines were added around the station soon after construction so that Freight travelling to Hoddesdon didn't have to wait for the local trains to depart the station.

2) Hoddesdon - Just north of Soulbury. It is a busy little town with both the brewery and power station in operation. Coal (on view) and grain arrives from the North, while the beer, once manufactured heads south to Coventry. An irregular goods train transports bricks from Farnham brickworks to the passenger station, which also sees both local and some express services calling at it.

3) Just north of Coventry. Iron ore trains load up before the long trek up north to the steel mill North west of Hoddesdon.

Continuing on from my previous post. Here are three more from the same game - thus completing the set for this game.

4) Helmsdale. A small town situated in the North East. A regular passenger service links the town to Farnham, however journey times on these trains are long, especially as the line down to Farnham is at times single track and is also heavily used by freight. A gravel train is seen loading up at Helmsdale west, the station serving the gravelworks which is the main employer of local folk along with the coal mines situated further east.

5) Helmsdale mines. (A shot which I rather like - though i'm not entirely sure why) The mines are an important primary industry for both the town of Helmsdale and the railway company. Coal is needed down south to power the steel mill that provides steel which is vital for the future growth of the railways.

6) Hoddesdon Steel Factory. Coal arrives from the North while the iron ore comes from way down south in Coventry. Production is booming meaning large amounts of steel are transported down the railway via Farnham to the Factories at Coventry.

Coming up in my thread soon:

1 or 2 more sets of small games. 1 set should contain quite an extensive amount of screenshots - so hopefully I can provide a decent story.

Then I may decide to show somes screens of my current game - one of these can already be seen Here*. The game is on a 2048*2048 (compared to 512*512), has 100 working trains, approximately 100ish stations, 45 passenger routes and is only 7 game years old.

I'm starting to make this thread more organised and "less" random. On that note here is a set of 6 screenshots from a fairly recent game of mine. The game itself was just a quick scenario (on a 1024*1024) thrown together in about 10 minutes. The idea was to combine some fairly long distance freight services, sparceley spread large city areas with a mix of small primary industries and rural districts in between. To date the game hasn't been played much since I stopped it in only 1930 (but who knows I may decide to return to it when I have some free time).

Thus moving on here are the first three screenshots.

1) Ilkeston. The largest city and busiest railway station. The station is the northern terminus to the companies fastest Locomotive the A1 4-6-2 Pacific. These engines have the duty of hauling passenger trains on the long haul down south to Saltash and they currently generate over half the profit that the company is making. Some make brief stops in the large towns of Leeds, Hailsham and Felixstowe whilst others are true Express services that travel non stop. Unfortunately none are on view at Ilkeston, however we do see one of the 4-4-0 express steamers that connects Ilkeston with Bridlington and Wickham - the centre of the lucrative steel industry/ In addition a local service that connects the city with the tiny farming village of Jarrow can be seen.

2) Slightly south of Ilkeston, is the Ilkeston Viaduct. It is primarily used by freight as a way of avoiding the busy lines around the station at Ilkeston. Raw materials from the south head up north to wickham steel mill (on view is a coal train heading back to Birkenhead coal mines), whilst goods trains load up at Ilkeston yard cross over the bridge before taking the single track line back up to Ilkeston station to connect with the mainline. As well grain trains from Jarrow Farm heading to selby brewery use the bridge and freight lines east of Ilkeston.

3) Jarrow. A tiny village. How it manages to have a shopping centre I do not know (I would've considered destroying this - but then the station wouldn't except passengers rendering the line even more pointless - In truth it is only there to reduce passengers at the crowded Ilkeston station ) When the locals aren't busy shopping they can be found working on the farm producing grain and hops that will be converted into beer at Selby Brewery.

On view is one of the Whickham bound iron ore trains from the south east. It will make the short trip down the Jarrow branch line before crossing over the Ilkeston Viaduct.

Following on (this time we're up north):

4)T Town of Bridlington. Serviced by 4-4-0 express steamers that link it with Ilkeston and Whickham. Unfortunately in both lines passenger trains are held up on the freight dominated resulting in long journey times and an irregular service. Freight trains are given the priority on the line so continue on the same level whilst passenger services have to climb up to reach ths station.

5) Whickham. The centre of the steel industry. Quite a small town but generally a desirable place to live - high employment levels, a booming economy, by the sea and has semi decent transport links. At present the town station is empty but the steel mill is full of life. A minerals train has just unloaded and left whilst two steel trains load up before heading south to Ilkeston yard.

6) Shelley. A seaside town centered around its brewery. At the moment there a rather empty scene - but as soon as the grain train arrives it will be full of life A 0-6-0 tank engine service works a local service along the sea wall around the bay to Whickham.

2A few from my current game.

1) Darlington & Darlington Docks. The main station is the Southern most stop for A1 run expresses (soon to be phased out and replaced by A4 streamliners) on the West Coast Main Line. This stretches from Darlington - Polesbrooke where the Hunstanton Branch of the WCML (going west of Polebrook) joins. Then expresses travel on towards Nottingham Junction where they either take the short trip into Nottingham Station (where they terminate) or head much further North to Fanborough, Shevington and Bradford. If you look closely you can see A1005 loading up. A true express service calling and terminating at Polesbrooke only. Whilst also on view is a standard 5 leading a local service into Darlington Docks (connecting Darlington to York and Duxford)

2) Kilburn. First stop for Express services on the WCML. Several trains are on view. At platform 1 and 2 are two stoppingl services one heading south to Darlington. The other heading on a long slow journey up North. Aside from the Main station is Kilburn High. A local station that connects Kilburn with the large towns of Ripon (east) and Stirling (to the west). The line is run by 570009 and 570010 (pannier tank engines) of which one is on shown heading towards Stirling.

3) Wrenthorpe. Next stop on North from Kilburn on the WCML. Most of the trains calling here are either stopping or fast services on the WCML. However the bay platform to the west sees several trains heading east linking Wrenthorpe with Derby, Cambourne, Richmond and Axminster. Some services head into Derby - however this means trains have to reverse at Derby to continue on East, thus most avoid derby. The Axminster service is probably the most important service as it connects the WCML at Wrenthorpe to the Shepton - Frome Mainline at Axminster. The Eastern bay platform sees far less use, with only a small 0-6-0 pannier tank ( Stirling North - Wrenthorpe ) train using it.

And continuing...

4) Heading further up north along the WCML we reach Polesbrooke. A major station and busy junction serving not only all trains on the WCML but also all trains on the Queensborough - Witham route (these come from the north west and then head south east meaning they cross the mainline either when entering or leaving the station). The station recentley saw an extenstion to the west, providing an extra 2 through platforms (resulting in 6 over all plus a north and south bay platform). On view in the screenshot are 3 stopping services hauled by either a Standard five or 4-4-0 express.

5) Before continuing up the WCML, we'll take a look at the small region to the South West.

The area has two major stations, Hunstanton and Ipswich, Hunstanton is on a branch off the WCML and is served by Express workings that serve the WCML whilst Ipswich is the centre for local trains that serve all the villages around the south west. Ipswich is the station on view here shortly after remodelling. Two bay platforms were added to the West of the station meaning that the city finally has a direct link to the WCML. On view is a 4-4-0 Express with a local service north to Hunstanton (platform 3), whilst a local working on the Sandbach branch arrives at one of the Northern bay platforms.

6) Another station in the south west region - Epping. Trains from the west will either terminate at Epping or avoid the station (on view here) and head further east to Duxford. The through platforms also serve trains that head to Duxford, however these originate from the North of the region before heading south to Duxford via Ipswich.
