Invisible engine for leaving wagons on a side track (UPD)

Post by AndersI »

Just for the fun of it, I created an invisible train engine :-)

With the help of this, I can put unused wagons on a side track:

Edit1 2007-12-03: Updated to diesel
Edit2 2007-12-03: Now shows small engine while running. Stop and switch direction and the engine will disappear.

You´re not the first ... :P

Last one who did it was Bernhard:

I was going to do something like this but never got round to it or suggesting it. The fact that two other people did it is most excellent! :D

:-) I didn't think so, but I couldn't find anything by searching the forum, so I thought: Why not?

BTW, is it possible to have different graphics for a running train and a stopped one? I would like to have a little shunter doing to job, and then disappear when I park the train.

You should be able to use vehicle variable B2, bit 1. :)

I like the idea :) At the moment though, it only works with electrics ;) I'd suggest making it a diesel. Aside from that, excellent idea.

I'm looking forward to this, but I'm with DanMack ... make it a diesel ... not all sidings are electrified, especially in freight yards.

Another question ... compatibility with other sets ... Do I have to give up using an engine in each of CanSet, NARS, UKRS, Serbian, .... etc.? Where does it fit in?

All these sets could easily provide that functionality as well. If you (and the .grf authors) would really like to include that "feature".

True ... If a set wants to support it they can include a version in their engine list ... with appropriate credits of course.

Now I almost forgot a most important question: Does it come in company colours?

I'll go hide now, very far away.

Why sell it? Just point it on a line crossing your opponent's line ... they'll never know what hit 'em.

Glad you like it! I've changed to a diesel engine instead of electric. First post updated.

You should try sending a number of them out on the lines without a schedule. Could be used to simulate signaling problems :-)

My networks invariably have enough problems as it is without adding more! Nice idea though :)

Worked like a charm! The only snag is that you have to change direction of the train after stopping it, to make the engine disappear. No big deal. First post updated again.

BTW, I'm using ID 73 for the moment, but there shouldn't really be any problems making that a parameter of the GRF. That will have to wait until I'm completely satisfied with everything else, as GrfMaker isn't the tool of choice for doing that (easiest done in the plain NFO code).

This is the sh... :D I like it.. I`ve just tested with US set and works just fine! (tested in OT) and with the selling problem: the only way is to use the option "Sell all trains in the depot"!
Could you increase the speed? It takes too much to move! :P
The rest is confetti!

I have no problems clicking the 'engine' and dragging it to the right to sell it?? (TTDP)

The speed must be so low to 'encourage' people not to actually use it in 'real' trains (as it has very low costs). Also, when running around in a switchyard trains can't go very fast...

the speed is fine since most the time it isn't going to move anywhere.

Re: selling. When I click and drag something in the depot it drags the image of the train, minus the cursor/pointer. As the train as such, has no image so it's difficult to tell where the train is in relation to the dustbin.
I'm sure I'll cope though :P
