Suggestion for new dock design

Post by Hyronymus »

With all the new, good-looking railroad stations being (close to) release(d) I started wondering if someone could try his hands on a dock. I know there is a wooden dock and I believe also a dock with crane but those are all of the original small kind. I also know it's a PITA to re-arrange the movements of vehicles. But is it possible to make a dock with a few landtiles or tiles build on the shores and doesn't require a different movement scheme?

I can only support this request. I really think that the docks should be changed to allow different graphics. (ie one for Passenger/Ferry terminal, a Container terminal, bulk freight terminal, etc.).
The mooring scheme is as you say, quite difficult to change, but that could be at a later stage.

I have been thinking on this subject since 2002. (Sorry, Hyronymus :)

By now, this can all be done w/o new "docks" by including harbour facilities into adjacent train stations.

As to the second point, AFAIR, improving ship´s movement would be a labourious task because ships movement routines are very inferior: there´s no collision detection and there's neither a signal system nor left/right side distinction for ships.

regards

I am familiar with that screenshot Michael, no hard feelings  . But that's a non-functional dock and I hope someone can come up with a functional one that doesn't require modification of the movement scheme.

Hyronimus: Great and timely suggestion!
This is especialy so with the advent of fisheries and caneries (See Lifeblood's work in North American Industries).
The wood and the crane docks are exe's that alter the trt files. It would be nice to see some new docks done in their own grf's.
With the new build over water feature for industries it would be great to be able to select a matching dock style as with station selection.
Michael's suggestion re using matching train stations is good but it doesn't quite address the situation where a stand-alone dock would be appropriate.
As The Irish says, mooring schemes could come at a later stage, but this definitely needs to be raised a notch or two in the to-do lists.

You could possibly fudge it a little bit and have a "train station" design that is all impassable port graphics and could sit in isolation next to a ship dock.

this is my idea, im not sure whether the logic would have to be changed but it works like truck bays etc. one ship per dock .

Most likely that would be hard but hey i am not in patch developer so i cannot be held for my ideas casing problems.

Note: how about using michael blunck's idea of a large dock like o his picture because if that could be implemented with a station that would be good.
