Adding US Set to OpenTTD?

Post by krtaylor »

I haven't played TTD in any of its variations in a while, but I thought I'd have a look-in on OTTD. I see that a great many of the old TTD GRF files can be downloaded directly into OTTD - but not the US Set.

Is there a technical reason for this? Or, can the US Set be added to the list of easily-available auto-downloads?

Just requires one of the set authors to upload it to BaNaNaS.

Well, that would be me. I thought it was on the old Bananas, guess not. I never messed with that much.

I believe it is on there under the name of "US Train Set". Haven't checked in game, but maybe a maximum version is set by accident so that it doesn't show up any more.

I just added it, that's why it's there now.

But I didn't add quite all the pieces because some of them were written by others. I have permission to distribute them and they're on my website, always have been:

So can I also add them to Bananas?

The signals are already there (as "Combined American Signal Set"), ISR is obviously already there, and has been considerably developed since the version on your website. What's left? The roads?

Yes, the roads, which also include some trams. I didn't write that set, I just had permission to distribute it alongside the rest of the US set - not exclusive permission, it also works well with the Canadian set. But I'd like to add it to the Bananas if that's OK.

Thanks for pointing out the signals, I didn't realize they were already on Bananas under a different name.

As old as these sets are, and considering how long you've maintained them, then I see no reason why you can't add them there. You may not have directly authored them, but you've been their caretaker much longer than the authors have been around and active. The only reason I wouldn't add them would be if one of the authors have uploaded a newer version.

OK, done! And as old as they are, it seems like there's still demand for them - the US set has only been up for a couple of days and already has over a hundred downloads. Not bad, and maybe it'll spark new interest.

Hmm. Why is the Planeset blacklisted? It works with OTTD in my test games.

Probably because randoms kept trying to upload it. Send a PM to TrueBrain.

I"m not familiar with the newer sets. Is the original Planeset obsolete? I mean, has someone done a better, more modern job so the Planeset isn't needed anymore?

But I admit I haven't played with all the newgrfs on Bananas. What, if any, planeset is generally used when playing OTTD?

I guess there really isn't much need for more than one planeset since real airplanes fly all over the world - well, maybe a Soviet-bloc planeset I suppose.

What do you think?

If it's blacklisted, it's probably because people who aren't an author of the set kept trying to be "helpful" and upload it, contrary to the Bananas TOS. Like I said, you should PM TrueBrain. :)

Av8 is quite popular (less so since plane ranges were introduced in recent versions  ). There's also WAS, which uses Av8 sprites with real-world liveries.

Any of you ever used the old PlaneSet? Does it still have a place?

I think it still has a place, especially since AV8 introduced the plane ranges.

It can't hurt to give people the choice. Putting it on Bananas will also make it automatically downloadable when people try to load an old/downloaded savegame or scenario that uses the grf.

Well, I've asked the Powers That Be to un-blacklist it so I can post it. We shall see.
