my first company

Post by bharryb »

Hello All

I would appreciate feedback on my first company, The highlights of which are my mainline with somewhere near 50 trains on and my offshore maglev oil transfer system.

Its not finished yet, so I know I have a lot more wood capacity at the lower end of 'main line'

Feedback would be most welcome on making my train round about more efficient, I decided I need it because I need to add another 20 odd trains in the future going across the main line, I think I am going to need more room for that though.

I have expanded the mainline with bypass and stuff but breakdowns still seem to be an issue:(. No where near as efficient as some of the stuff I have seen on here.

Should be this message moved to the Scenarios and Saved Games forum?

At many stations on your network, signals are not PBS'd. Have you ever heard of NewGRFs?

You can disable breakdowns in the difficulty settings if you don't like those. I have breakdowns disabled myself, because trains break down far too often for my liking.

Furthermore you should try and avoid 90 degree turns as much as possible. There are even a few in your network that are absolutely unnecessary. If you want an incentive to not build 90 degree turns, go into the advanced settings and enable "forbid trains to make 90 degree turns", that way you have to build without those.

Lastly, try reading something on signalling. You seem to use path signals where you don't need them and are not using them where they are actually useful. The Manual is a good starting point to learn something about the different types of signals.

I wouldn't be too critical on someones first game :)

Looks like a nice game to me, I'd like to see some more complicated junctions but all in all looks quite good, you could definitely improve your offshore maglev by making it double tracked at least. A bit of nasty play taking out opponent buses with a train  but hey nothing says you can't

Hope to see more from you!

Thanks,

Hello guys

Thanks for the replies.

I have read lots on signalling, but i had not heard of pbsing. I will look it up now.

Losts of changes since my last posting. i got a town to around 20k pop but now its shrinking massively, its gone down to 16k:(

anyone know why that is happening?

also..

do you mean try not to make the trains turn through 180 degrees? Trains can't turn through 90 degrees anyway? Why is not cool to do that (either way)?

I forgot about this post, so did not read the advice before i played on, but here is my upgraded network.

Here's an example of what I meant by the 90 degree turns. I marked the unnecessary ones in red; these are easily solvable by placing the track in the suggested blue locations instead.

Trains go really slow through those 90 degree turns. Avoid those and your network will perform more efficient. Preferrably you should make your turns even wider, but that's up to you.
