Rails with concrete base

Post by Guildmaster »

I had this problem for some time now and I have been wondering : could someone make a .grf that makes concrete bases rather than plain grass when the rails are in the middle of a city, in the same way that a city automatically makes concrete side walks for roads ? Because I hate the way the rails look in a big city.

Impossible. Or at least currently impossible since there's only one set of tracks and the game doesn't know whether a piece of railway track is inside a city or not. One could create the graphics, but then you'll get concrete all around your map.

Not totally impossible. If you've no problem to give up Maglev or Monorail-track for it, AFAIK it should be possible to do this, but he'd have to build the concrete-track himself where he want's to have it placed. AFAIK the Japanese set uses this method to offer special tracks for Shinkansen.

How would a train that usually sits on normal rail know that it should use mono/maglev track (whether or not with or without replaced graphics) in cities?

I wouldn't mind to manually put concrete bases as long as the trains don't use them as stations. But still I might consider shifting to monorail of maglev.

can't you make diffrent sets of track, like you can do with stations? (use a drop-down list or something)

In the end everything is possible, but then you should find your way to the suggestions forum, not the graphics forum. People involved in creating graphics can usually tell what's possible and what's not possible without changing the internals of the game, i.e. what currently is possible with newgrf.

This suggestion, how nice it may be, is currently not possible with newgrf.

In case you don't mind having one type of trains only driving around in cities on top of concrete based tracks, and a whole different set of trains (which are not interchangeable) outside cities on the normal tracks, I might suggest the 2cc set. That set contains metro vehicles for use inside cities which use the monorail vehicle slot. A seperate grf replaces the monorail with metro tracks (3rd rail!). You (or one) could change the graphics of that metro track set to reflect concrete base (for personal use only though).
