Hi!
I encountered this problem(bug?) when upgrading to r14513 (i don't know which version i had before, but most likely a ~1 day old nightly).
On the left side of the picture, you can see the "before" state (it's a cargodest pic, but they share the same config file with the nightly), the texts are smooth. On the right side is the "present" state, there's clearly something wrong with the text. No config files were changed, and the ttf file is not corrupted (as you can see, it works with the cargodest build).

Re: Font handling problem
It still looks fine on my system (which also shares the same font). However, the screenshots seem to have different fonts and not differently rendered fonts (accents in one are vertical in the other they are diagonal).
Re: Font handling problem
I give up
. I tried to replace/change every possible file that i could think of, but with no success. I tried it with Arial bold too, and it was the same: fonts were arial, cargodest had normal accents while the nightly had only dots instead of them (also, the text was worse than the cargodest). What really frustrates me is not the fact that the font is messed up, but that it works perfectly with another build at the same time.

Re: Font handling problem
Try changing the font size. The font in your r14523 screenshot seems to be lower than in the other for some reason.
Re: Font handling problem
Thanks for the idea, it shows partly what i expected: the accents are now correct (á, é, etc), but the text itself still has bad quality & size.
Re: Font handling problem
Yay! Fixed in today's nightly

Talking about fonts.
In Windows, users can specify a custom DPI size.
Unfortunately Open TTD looks blurry with a DPI other than 96
