Error message, please help

Post by polynike »

Only discovered this great OTTD the other day. Ive been playing with no problems until i decided to install one of the nightly thingies. The game didnt wrok so i had to reinstall. Now i get the message "Your OPENTTDW.GRF file is missing or corrupted" and the game will not launch.

Why would i get this message when i have been playing v0.6.2 with no problems until this morning?
Please help and thanks in advance :)

You can find the missing file on your Transport Tycoon CD. Just copy it back into the data directory for OpenTTD.

Well, no, you can't. Openttd[w|d].grf isn't located on the TTD cd, but should be included with the game. I think reinstalling the game would work. You could also download the compressed archive of the same version, extract the openttd[w|d].grf files from it and place it in the openttd/data directory.

If you installed the nightly in the same directory as the previous installation:

When you installed the nightly did you unzip all the files or just overwrite your old openttd.exe file? Because nightlies does not only contain a newer openttd.exe but many other files are also of newer versions. So easiest is to install your nightly in a separate directory and then have your original TTD data files in My Documents\openttd\data (or ~/.openttd/data in Linux). If you put the TTD data files there all your OpenTTD installations will find them and you can keep them separated and save some disk-space. If you decide to download GRF-files you can also put them in the shared data directory.

If you ever decide to try OpenTTD Auto Update 2 (a tool to keep OpenTTD installations up to date) it is designed around the model of having one directory per kind of OpenTTD installation. And then just keep the TTD data files and GRF packs centralized.
