NewGRF packs?

Post by TehFury »

Just wondering if there's someplace to download all the graphics a server uses in, say, a zip file. Don't mean to sound lazy, but I'm just wary of having to start downloading dozens of individual files every time I want to spice up my gameplay some...

Why are you downloading everything repeatedly? You only have to download them once. Then just leave them there until you need them.
To get a good answer, ask a Smart Question. Similarly, if you want a bug fixed, write a Useful Bug Report. No TTDPatch crashlog? Then follow directions.

Sorry, I meant that every time I visited a new server I'd have to download new ones because they were different. I'm aware that I can keep the ones I've already downloaded :P

A full compatible set would be in effect useful.

Openttdcoop has one : http://openttdcoop.ppcis.org/wiki/index.php/GRF_Table but I think there isn't all compatible Grf like ECS.

See, I don't think that GRF packs are the way forward because everyone likes something different. For servers, then fair enough but thats an issue for the server admin to look at. For general use I think ti wouild be too much hassle to make and update 'packs' when each person can just download the ones they want. Its not that bad really.
In a similar vein, take a look at this post here.

Maybe GRFCrawler can be expanded with some sort of 'shopping cart'. Select all the grfs you want and add 'em to the cart. When you're done shopping, click 'download' and a zipfile with all the selected grfs will be compiled for download.

Sever admins could add a list of all grfs required for their server (e.g. "click here to add all required grapics for server x to cart").

This is technically possible with a little help of PHP, but would require all grf authors to upload their files to GRFCrawler.

Something needs to be figured out to include the readme belonging to each grf file. A directory structure inside the zipfile would be nice, but I don't know if that's possible. Automatic creation of newgrf[w].cfg should be provided.

A great thing would be some automatic download, like NetLoadModule for Litestep (if anyone knows this..).

By which Maedhros refers to both of those ideas.
