P w n e d

Post by maartena »

Why is p w n e d considered a bad word on this forum? When you type it without the spaced it is replaced with [I am an idiot]. :D :P
Guess what! I got a fever! And the only prescription...... is MORE COWBELL!

Because Owen is silly, and doesn't like the word.

In all fairness, it is an utterly ridiculous and annoying word and saying it does make you silly. Just at least use "owned" which is a bit better.

The word is silly, but I don't think its so silly to be on swear list. But it is not my decision which words are filtered and which not.

BTW you can turn off the swear filter in your preferences, so you won't see any more censoring ...

I believe it was added due to a certain user a few years ago being annoying and using it excessively. A bit like the word w hit being in the word filter, due to another user always misspelling "with". Now, really, they're just quirky and fun. :P Plus, I hate the whole "p wned" thing, it's annoying.

I hate both the word [I am an idiot] and owned, as well as noob and all those other retarded words that sweaty geeks like to take to real life and make arses of themselves...

I was sitting in Games Workshop one day, listening to my nemesis (not a friendly kind, he's an angry fat nerd who should bugger back to world of warcraft and stop picking on little kids) yell out "omg owned noob" when he beat this nice little kid at a game... Kid was a customer of mine when I worked at Games Workshop, and I felt sorry for him.

Those words are retarded, and anyone saying them should be shot at.

To get a good answer, ask a Smart Question. Similarly, if you want a bug fixed, write a Useful Bug Report. No TTDPatch crashlog? Then follow directions.

I have to admit, it does sound quite stupid when someone says "omg" in real life, usually because they try and say it as a continuous word.

Hehe, I'm with Raichase on this one. The languages are going down the drain quick, due to all this OMG, WTF, etc...

On the other hand, It's probably inevitable, but that doesn't mean I have to do it as well.

Haven't all of you used the 'word' OK? Many times? Ever heard of languages evolving? We may not like it, but this is part of how languages evolve. Some 'words' become words and stay in the language, some disappear down into oblivion (thankfully!), but the language is never static, always changing. You are on the verge of becoming 'the previous generation' (I'm a dinosaur myself, according to my kids), slipping away from the front line, soon you'll be voting for 'keeping our national heritage intact' and so on...

I agree with you. But there is a difference between a language evolving and using chatspeak abbreviations (like LOL and OMG and WTF and IMO and AFAIK etc. etc.) in real life. It is even discouraged to use chatspeak in some more sophisticated forums like this one (which I greatly appreciate!) as you have enough time typing out the words, in contrast to a chat, where quick typing may (or may not) be useful (as long as the chat partner understands your abbreviations.

EDIT: By the way, what does this fricken "p w n e d" mean, anyway?? And how the heck do you pronounce it???
One after one, by the star-dogged Moon,
Too quick for groan or sigh,
Each turned his face with a ghastly pang,
And cursed me with his eye.

From Wikipedia

The slang term P`wn (see pronunciation note below), used primarily in the Internet gaming culture, means to own, have ownage over, and/or soundly defeat an opponent. It is sometimes used for taunting of an in-game enemy and gloating over victories. It can also be used, especially by non-gamers, in the context of getting "p`wned" by The Man.

In Internet security jargon, to "p`wn" means "to compromise" or "to control", specifically another computer (server or PC), web site, gateway device, or application; it is synonymous with one of the definitions of hacking. An outside party who has "owned" or "p`wned" a system has obtained unauthorized administrative control of the system.

The term was one of 16 to appear on the 2006 "List of Words and Phrases Banished from the Queen's English for Misuse, Overuse and General Uselessness," released annually by Lake Superior State University.
