Noob needing help

Post by rob_jeffers »

Hi every one
I didnt realise that there were so many transport tycoon fans around still. I didnt even know I could download the game(BTW i still have the CD Rom).

But anyway, after using other peoples GRF's i decided I want to make my own. I have scraped around for a few programs. I just need one more.

An editor that will let me add sprites to the PCX's or edit them. I dont know how to do this but I do have a tutorial handy. What programs would you recommend.
Why didnt anyone tell me I could play on windows xp.

when you extract TTD graphic you can convert PCX to BMP and edit it even in MSPAINT (then save as BMP and convert to PCX) ... the best get some images of already done work where you see small palette and use that palette
what are you looking at? it's a signature!

Making GRF files exists out of 2 main things:
  • Drawing the sprites. Tutorials on this (especially trains) can be found in the link in my sig.
  • Coding 'NFO'-files. This codes a vehicle stats and lots of other stuff... pretty complicated...
So, what do you want to do?

I use The GIMP (windows installers here) or SpriteEdit, depending on what I'm doing.

I've found for editing sprites, you want to get a .png already in the correct pallette, then wack a little image on their with all the colors, then just use the eye-dropper in paint and get cracking.

You' ll find a method that suits you best however, Everyone here does it differently.

And for coding, well, I use GRFMaker, which isnt released publicly, yet. Other than that, most people hand-code their .grf's in NFO language. Although their are several alternatives (GRFMaker and GRFCompiler) in the works.

Good luck and have fun.

And it supports palettes, so if you make mistake and draw PNG or PCX in 16 or 24-bit palette, you can convert image in I.mage to TTD palette.

Well, I never drew any boats. Anyways, the color palette and dimensions are the same for all graphics, including boats. Those are mentioned at my tutorials. I don't know the exact size (in pixels) of a boat... and to be honest, I can't remember anyone who might know (boats are not drawn that often).

Of course you can always browse throuh the train tutorials, it can't hurt

(maybe you can find help in the PlaneSet topic, because AFAIK the don't really have maximum/fixed sizes either. But I'm not sure.

If you want some sample ship sizes, take a look at MB's ships. Obviously you can't use them, but they work pretty well. Don't be afraid to push the envelope; there are oversize vehicles in just about every set: MB's NewShips, the USSet, the PlaneSet, and I won't even mention George's Long Vehicles.

OT: Brane just came up with possible method of fixing the problem with the Zep bodies in the aircraft details window. Shoot me now. Please!

The problem with drawing a new ship is that it will be somewhat awkward for anyone to use. Each vehicle type in TTD has a limited number of slots - that is, there can only be X number of vehicles of each type in any one game. For some reason, the number of ship slots is VERY low, and MB's New Ships set uses every last one of them. Most everyone uses that set too, so there's no room to add another. In theory it would be possible to do a GRF file of just your SeaCat, coded in such a way that it overwrote MB's hovercraft. You'd have to place it afterward in your newgrfs CFG file though.
