Junctions! Where do you get them

Post by hawk »

Where do u guys (and girls) come up with the large and complex junctions that are about the size of a screen, that i seem to notice when i download people various savegames. I mean i have junctions (which i thought were complex before i came here) but they dont have nothing on yours. They efficient enough for me anyway and they are aobut half the size.

That is quite scary really considering some of the layouts that the AI is capable of building.

I did that too actually. I tought you had to go a long route to get much money, since the game counted by the distance, so i made a lot of turns and bulls*** like the ai do :P

I thought the distance was measured in a straight line not along the track.

Try to transport every wood to one sawmill, and every steal to one stealmill. try to do your junctions with as many tracks as possible. Instead of two 3-way crossings relative close to each other, make one 4-way junction.

Often these big junctions develops over time. Maybe you add a station close to it, or your juctions capacity needs to be extended.

i'm talking more general terms, rather than specific layouts.. like using the single line, with sidings and signals off it to let the trains pass eachother.. i *used* to think it was great to have 2 trains on the same line! oh i have so much to learn... :P

All my junctions I made from trial and error.... 100% my own thoughts go into my tracks. Its not the most efficent method but when I build the perfect junction I feel proud of my accomplishment. Its not just a game as it can test your mental ability on how to watch, analyze, find the reason for a problem and then a way to correct it.

Couldn't agree more. :D
That's the main reason I like TTD (patched) so much, trying to optimize everything to perfection.

Here's a pic of a junction I made off of pure inspiration. It's in what I call my "rough stage" and has delays. I'm thinking of how to expand it. Just remember inspiration can be found most places. Whenever you go anywhere and your stopped at a light in your car. Take a look at how the roads run. Then think of every car as a train. And use that as a scale. All of sudden each stop sign and light is a huge expanse.

Look at my junction. See how every track is placed to mimick a road way? Think of those draw offs as those right hand turns. THe crossing in the middle is just lanes for turning. And since any junction can be improved, the straight paths are placed underneath in a tunnel as they are not changed.

Actually if Path Base Signalling (PBS) becomes perfected my junction above, would be quite awesome.

Actually if Path Base Signalling (PBS) becomes perfect, you won't even need junctions anymore...

Then how will trains get from one side of your network to the other?

Well, with PBS, a lot of junctions can certainly be reviewed and made a good bit less complex. However, at busy spots, I can still see the needs for flyovers and tunnels even with PBS.

Love that shortname "PBS" by the way. Sounds really professional...

As for the rest, my junctions always develop over time and I try not to build them symetric just because of the look. Mostly I try to have the route with most traffic being undisturbed pass-trough.

But it takes a while for really complex ones to build up and some of them often get rebuild a few times over the years if they don't work well.

I know it was almost 2 months ago, but conductorbob, having signals on each block really isnt neccessary. If the train hasn't got its arse-end past the last signal, the next one can't move anyways, and starts to block intersections.
