Re: WIP: Beach object tiles
That crowded beach looks cool ! Maybe add some sideways towels, usually people do not perfectly align with each other.
Also, maybe you could have a beach volleyball court (or whatever the name is in English, google doesn't want to be my friend...), a small hut with various surf boards, windsurfs, pedal-boats etc.
I do have one question though : are there any "whiter" yellows in the palette you could use for the sand ? IMO currently it is a little too dark, too orange. Actually, it even looks more salmon pink than yellow. I know this colour matches the beaches on normal coast tiles, but on a larger surface it looks a bit odd.

i like the new crowded beach

Re: WIP: Beach object tiles
Thnx all that you like the crowded beach!

As for the other things, all help will be greatly appreciated, so if you can't resist drawing some stuff, please do
I tend to disagree, especially with slopes as steep like in OpenTTD world, people would roll overMaybe add some sideways towels, usually people do not perfectly align with each other

Yes, very good ideas! I've already been thinking of the beachvolleybal courtAlso, maybe you could have a beach volleyball court (or whatever the name is in English, google doesn't want to be my friend...), a small hut with various surf boards, windsurfs, pedal-boats etc.

I agree, but it is very difficult with the limited colors to make something nice. However I gave it a shot. Made some small changes to the texture of the sunny sides. Is a bit better I think:

Very nice as usual, I prefer the lighter colored sand

Re: WIP: Beach object tiles
I suspect that the palette precludes you doing anything but the darker parts of the new beach are a little too dark IMO
Re: WIP: Beach object tiles
i think the lighter version is too bright. something inbetween the two, maybe?

Re: WIP: Beach object tiles
I like the lighter version too. Indeed, it might be a tiny bit too bright, but when covered with umbrellas and people it looks just fine =)
About the palette restriction, wouldn't it be possible to use any colour now that 32bpp works in trunk with newgrfs ? People tend to associate 32bpp with extra zoom, but in fact maybe it would look nice to juste use more colours when drawing pixel art.
I don't have much free time before next week, but I might have a go at drawing stuff then. I've never been good at it, but you never know, I might make something decent by mistake ^^

Re: WIP: Beach object tiles
That does indeed sound possible, but introduces more work if wanting to include palette animation and/or company colors. If one desires neither of those, then there's no extra work with masking.cmoiromain wrote:About the palette restriction, wouldn't it be possible to use any colour now that 32bpp works in trunk with newgrfs ? Re: WIP: Beach object tiles
I like the lighter one, but it depends on climate, maybe give artic climate a darker one?

Thnx for all your replies!
I did a little (well a lot actually) redraw/paint.
How is this?
Please don't wait for that, still a lot of work to be done.

Ain't going to be done by me, I don't play arctic so no direct use to me and therefor too much work that I don't want to do. But when I release them you (or anybody else) is welcome to repaint/code them to fit in better with other climates. They will be GPLv2.maybe give artic climate a darker one?

Re: WIP: Beach object tiles
Too fine Quast, thats comparable to Lombok (ooh, really white sands !)
Hope we get a quick Savannah climate too
Those things can (or could) be find in a place where the sands comes from chalk nearby. No, this is real, and because the grass in the Temperate doesn't have any chalk, I think we should make things somewhat abit darker again overall...
And my suggestion, arctic should use dark / black sands (quite common everywhere)

Re: WIP: Beach object tiles
Well I must say that I am quite happy with this result with these colors available in the palette. A tiny bit darker would be nice, but that kind of yellow is not available in the palette.
OpenTTD is still a fantasy world (even though it is getting close to real life thanks to some wonderful grf's) and to be honest this is the kind of beach I would like to visit
And I also think that this kind of beach looks best when it has eyecandy on it (also details of the eyecandy is a lot better visible now) and I really want to get to doing that now that I got the base tiles.
And again, repainting them to fit into other climates better is not a priority to me, but I don't mind if anyone wants to give repainting a go, they might get a better result than me. Here are the tiles:

Re: WIP: Beach object tiles
You make it considerably easier for others (and yourself), if you use the png file format. Grfcodec also reads png while browsers and normal file system viewers generally can also display it - as opposed to pcx.Quast65 wrote:

Re: WIP: Beach object tiles
Sorry for this O/T
Note that sometimes theres a bunch of trash stranded on the beach
--------
(yes, theres a lot of them here, out of tourist interest) And also a good addition for active volcano tip
Oh, you really want to go here then, the so-called "Pasir Putih" (white sands) in Lombok island, or Bali. Someday you could give it a go, me can give infosQuast65 wrote:... and to be honest this is the kind of beach I would like to visit![]()

I'll give it a try for ash-like sandsQuast65 wrote: And again, repainting them to fit into other climates better is not a priority to me, but I don't mind if anyone wants to give repainting a go, they might get a better result than me. Here are the tiles:

Re: WIP: Beach object tiles
Talking about beautiful beaches is never off topic
My favourite ones are on the island of Fuerteventura (part of the Canary Islands), thanks to sahara desert sand being blown there and brought in by the sea they got some great beaches there too (a lot of the other islands have the dark vulcanic sand). Also the great honey rum they make there helps in enjoying their beaches too
And only a 4 hour flight from the Netherlands.
Maybe this can help you also, the code for getting those graphics as slope aware objects. Might be useful if you want to test your drawings out in the game. You only have to change the location of your graphicsfile and the location of the sprites in that file (I assume you have a bit of coding knowledge and know how to use GRfcodec to make it into a GRF)

Re: WIP: Beach object tiles
The brighter version is really brutally overbrightened I think; the original did fit opengfx a lot better - if you look at opengfx grass, it definitely is not reflecting strong lighting, while the beach seems to.
