Allow gimp and photoshop files

Post by planetmaker »

Hello,

there are a few file extensions which would come in handy, if they were allowed to be attached without resorting to zip or similar:
  • xcf Gimp graphics files
  • psd Photoshop graphics files
  • lng OpentTTD and NML language files
Cheers,
pm

I may not run the place but I do know that GIMP and Photoshop can produce some rather large files at times. I would know as I've worked with both for art and editing

Allowing these file formats will not affect the allowed attachment size so I don't see a problem there. It remains the responsibilty of the submitter of such files to check if they can be attached at all.

Well then I dont think some PSD and XCF files will fit, since they can get way over that (i once was working on a 100 MB PSD in my com tech class, took like 5 minutes to save it each time)

Maybe and maybe not, not sure how large the files planetmaker works with are. Best check with him :).

When I use PSD, it pretty much never goes over 6 MB. If you worked on a 100 MB PSD file, you were doing some pretty massive work graphically and not working on, say, sprites for OTTD

With rare exception, usually my Photoshop and Gimp files are less than the 6MB limit, they can be found in the respective repositories at the DevZone. OpenTTD sprite sheets are not A0 true-colour pre-print stage files.

And I just saw in Chill's PP thread, there's the dmp filetype missing as allowed extension. So here my currently complete wishlist ;-)
  • xcf Gimp graphics files
  • psd Photoshop graphics files
  • lng OpentTTD and NML language files
  • dmp OpenTTD crash dump files

Just for an experiment...

I've decoded the Dutch trainset and the DBXL and taken the sprites' file into Photoshop and into PSD - nowhere near 6MB. So unless someone is interested in posting some multi-layered artwork or a 6.8 GB photoshop pre-print B0 file (which I'll be happy to provide  )...

I support the idea.

I've added .xcf, .psd and .dmp. .lng was already enabled (I guess nobody's actually wanted to post a .lng file in order to notice that :P).

Unless there are actually examples of people wanting to upload those files, I'd rather not be adding lots of extensions "just in case", to be honest. People can surely just zip things if they want to upload an odd file that isn't supported.
