(Bump).
1. The Heavy Equipment set has a coder - Zephyris. Thanks Zephyris! This is great because it means the set will work well with GRVTS and eGRTVS. Thanks also to DJ Nekkid for creating the test grf that was posted previously in this thread.

2. I'm posting finished sprites for the Heavy Equipment set on my site tt-foundry.com
I won't try and maintain set tracking tables there, but I will link to the discussion threads and any grf releases.

More sprites coming soon. I've got hold of this book Giant Earthmovers for inspiration

cheers,

Andy

Four wheel drive tractor, available from the 1960s. Inspired by MB Trac. Replaced later in the game by a tractor inspired by JCB Fastrac, which is...faster.

Special note to tractor freaks (I know you've tuned in): no special tractor requests please, this DJ has a fixed playlist for tractors :P

What about LV4 compatibility?

Trying to make a road vehicle set compatible with LV4 is silly in my opinion because of the ridiculous scale of LV4. For that reason I didn't make the UK Tram Set compatible with LV4.

Just my opinion, though.

-- Disclaimer -- The following includes some conjecture. Zephyris might correct me on any of the below --

Full LV4 compatibility is not a goal for the Heavy Equipment set. It's not that we think there's anything wrong with LV4, just that it gets very complex to be compatible with multiple sets.

The Heavy Equipment set (HEQS) will function best in OTTD using the engine pool: that will enable the full extended range of vehicles, including some that are frankly a bit bonkers, and one or two that will radically change the gameplay possibilities of RVs. I kid you not :)

My understanding is that the engine pool opens up many more IDs, however I believe conflicts might be possible between sets even when the engine pool is in use. Engine pool is the most likely route to use LV4 with HEQS.

A basic version of HEQS will be available for TTDPatch players and OpenTTD players who can't use engine pool. This will offer a small range of key vehicles such as mining trucks and wheeled tractors. It is intended to be used alongside GRVTS, or possibly the default vehicles. I can't say whether this version will be compatible with LV4, but I imagine there will be ID conflicts.

HEQS running costs, speed, capacity etc will be balanced for gameplay against GRVTS, not any other set.

hope that helps,

Andy

I agree with what andythenorth said, I think he covered everything!

And another thing, do you mind if I hijack a couple of heavy equipment sprites from http://tt-foundry.com/ for the opengfx project? I'm spicing up some of the industries...

Thanks a lot for the comprehensive answer! I respect your decision not to make a version compatible with LV4.

Personally, I could live with that, as I really want to use both sets in my game.

Here is a bit of early heavy machinery. I have had a couple of attempts drawing it, but my drawing was hopeless.

Note intro year of 1915, and top speed 1 mph. There was a little TV documentary about this beast a few years ago, the son of the driver described the ride as "bone shattering". Not surprising given the shape of the wheels.

If somebody wants to draw and code it I can take more photos, but not quickly, it's about 6 hours drive away. I have not got any good pics of the trailer.

That's bonkers! We'll see whether it makes it into the set (no promises yet) - but thanks for posting it.

Definitely an interestion piece of equipment, would probably have to up the speed to about 5MPH for gameplay though

There's a test grf with a mining truck earlier in the thread, probably around page 4 - it was created and posted by DJ Nekkid (thanks).

A new test grf will be released reasonably soon: this will feature various tractors and the mining truck.

cheers,

Andy
