Using Openttdcoop GRF Pack With Open TTD (No Server Logon)

Post by JCarnon »

Hi,

Can anyone point me in the right direction with the use of Openttdcoop's GRF Pack (v6) in Open TTD (0.6.4 Beta).
Do I just put the folder (with all the grf's) in the Data folder? Is that it? Or does this pack only work when you log on to one of their servers?

Anyone?

Cheers

0.6.4 beta? I haven't seen 0.6.0 final and there's beta for 0.6.4!

OK. You put them in data folder. Then add them in NewGRF Settings menu and you can play with them in single player too. For more information look here

Sorry I meant 0.6.0 (Beta 4). My bad!
Thanks for the info, I have added them in to the data folder but had a blonde moment and completely forgot I had to add them manually as well.
I'll give it a bash later, when no-one at work is looking over my shoulder!

Cheers

One more quick question.

Are all the GRF's compatible with one another. IE If I turn them all on is it going to cause any conflicts and crash the game?

Many Thanks

It is not going to crash your game (or well, it shouldn't) but you can't enjoy all the graphics as some of them overwrite each other. Just try it out.

I'd suggest to try out one or a few at a time to see which ones you like. Then after some time you have your favorite composition of grfs which you use most often. At least it's like that for me 8)

I've done that, too. I've picked few I like, and then de-activate the rest. I'm not a massive fan of the ECS, but then again, I have yet to properly try playing with them.

There be some good graphic sets in there.

I wonder if anyone has thought of making an ultimate download? With all the stable, finished grfs going?
What about you? Will you join me when the time comes to be a hero?

Some authors of grfs do not agree to that. Some have even copyrighted their grfs.

Well.. so to say, the coop pack is kinda ultimate.. And it has permissions of authors too.

I think you'll have a hard job finding anyone who hasn't.

Actually, I believe it has authors' permissions but only for playing on the openttdcoop servers, not as a general way of downloading lots of GRFs at once.

Of course, the distinction is minimal and there's no way of enforcing it...

Not quite. They are the only ones allowed to distribute it. Though others may use it anywhere according to the README:

Code: Select all

You are NOT allowed to redistribute this pack.
If you haven't downloaded it from openttdcoop.ppcis.org, please inform us:
irc://irc.oftc.net/#openttdcoop
openttdcoop@ppcis.org

All servers using this pack are listed here:
http://openttdcoop.ppcis.org/wiki/index.php?title=GRF#Non_.23openttdcoop_Servers.2C_which_also_use_our_pack
If you play with this GRFs on an other server, please let us know.
(Its allowed but we like to know it.)
And now I wonder how do I see in the GRF-list of a game that the activated grf are taken from the ottdgrf-pack and not downloaded themselves... Hm...

I think it's there that it's just polite to let them know. Nobody restricts you to use it, but if you know you have downloaded

Code: Select all

If you play with this GRFs on an other server, please let us know.

Wow, this has kinda gona off on a tangent. I assume you don't need to tell them you have downloaded the pack and only intend on using it while playing a stand-alone game!

I agree. But the other host may not offer them for download him or herself.

Yeah. You don't need to notify them. Just if you want to host a server with these grf, it'd be nice if you told them.

Hey TTD Players

Well, maybe we need to speak a official word from #openttdcoop. We now play almost the 3. year with a GRFPack. (since OTTD nightlies has support for NewGRF). At the beginning, we had many d/c because of missing or wrong GRF. That has changed since OTTD 0.5, but now, you need exact the same version of GRF as the server to join.

That was the start of our "more public" availalbe GRF pack.

I don't think, we have permission of EVERY grf author to make it that way, but also no author did permit it. So its still in grey area. Thats also the reason, why old packs aren't available anymore. So if a author don't like our pack, he can write a email and "order" us to remove "his" GRF. We will remove it and release a new pack. That will garantee that it isn't available, if you like the GRF you have to ask the author after.

We also think, that we can't control, who does use our pack, we only can ask them to tell us, so we and the authors know, who is running his server with the pack and he could ask them to update or remove his GRF.

Until now, thats not happen with a single GRF, we received some mails to update a GRF but noone liked to have his GRF removed. We also included a system to be sure, EVERY readme or license file will be included and stored. (not overwritten from an other GRF and such) We also provide a table where all GRFs listed with link to the download area and the credits of course.
That table needs a lot of work and has some redundancy to GRFCrawler/TT-Forums/Readmes/etc. but I think, its worth to keep it.

Thats my 5 cents (Rappen) to the pack...

The GRFs are still owned to the authors, we "only" distribute those, we like to know, who is using it, that we also know, who we have to inform about changes, means mainly, if a author likes to remove his GRF. Thats all about that...

i can only see one (good) reason to not permit usage of a grf, and that is if it's either not finished, or full of bugs. And thoose two kinda hold hands... What would be the point of makeing a newgrf, and not let other people play with it. Atleast things that gets published on (one of) the graphics section of this forum, or via grfCrawler. If u ask me, every authour that publish his or her work actually want and hope that people will play with his creations...
