personally, I liked this rerecording better:
tt - TTDTHEME.mp3
TTD theme rerecording.
(1.06 MiB) Downloaded 545 times
However, I liked the rerecording of the original theme even more, the ttd theme seems too 'busy' with realistic instruments behind it. The original has a more 'jazzy' feel to it.
tt - TTTHEME.mp3
(1.13 MiB) Downloaded 564 times
in this context I mean 'original' as in the original transport tycoon.

I do have rather a soft spot for the original TT theme. However, discussion of this is somewhat off-topic, this thread is supposed to be for sound effects replacements. :)

It doesn't really fit in here, but it would be great, if starting sounds could be assigned to different engines. atm we only have generic sounds depending on the engine's type. But it would be great to have some different ones for different models (and maybe store the sounds in the newgrfs.
Maybe one day I could hear the Taurus melody in the game.

{{AFAIK it is already possible with newGRFs}}
PS: And I stopped the propaganda to support Dave Worley since he got a nice new red hat now.[/color]
I know I have a BBCode error in my signature but I really cba to fix it.

Oops, didn't know that. Maybe I should record some sounds for Michael Blunck's alpine set. Thanks for the info!

Yes, custom sounds are already possible for TTDPatch since years. However, to get these sounds is near to impossible. I´ve spent a large amount of time on this but didn´t completely succeed, especially not for all those old engines.

On another note, TTDPatch allows as well for "ambient sounds", so feel free to record the sound of the Austrian Alps on a nice summer day for the benefit of the game. 8)

Michael

My submissions for bus pull away and bus pull away with horn (well in this case not a horn but, something more fitting) and train whistle (generic)

Hm, these could certainly be adapted for use in the game I think. I may have a shot at editing it at some point soon (after exams) and see what I can do with them. :)

About music copyrights, if you recorded separately tt theme for example, you get rid of copyright of recorder, publisher and performer, but copyright of author is still present. The copyright of author expire, but after long time (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_co ... ght_length for terms for all countries). Thus use of classic music may be the option, because authorship copyright is expired for it and is not hard to found free recordings (=without copyright of recorder, publisher and performer).

Same for sounds, it is possible to found some sites with free recordings, that have compatible license with OpenTTD and distribute it with (for example - http://freesound.iua.upf.edu/http://freesoundfiles.tintagel.net/Audio/, http://simplythebest.net/sounds/WAV/sou ... index.html, http://ljudo.com/.

Then certainly all we need to do is ask him?

I've recorded some high-quality samples of miscellaneous building sounds, like a hammer hitting a nail, a sledgehammer on a condrete floor, a saw, and so on.
Let me now if any of these could be of interest. I'd be more than happy to share them!

hanton, if you're happy to share them, than just post them and let us see... I mean hear those sounds :)
I was planning to make some music for OpenTTD, but I am still without my computer, I mostly do drum and bass music but I'd say most of you would like that jazzy sound from the original music. Although we should be now discussing sounds and not music... and with sounds I cannot help you much because I don't have any recording equipment.

Yes, but it also depends on what type of agreement he signed with Microprose - mainly if he passed them exclusive or non-exclusive and time-limited or time-unlimited license. Unfortunately if it was exclusive and time-unlimited license, copyright is stucked in Microprose´s successor (after many mergers in may be Infogrames Entertainment SA or Atari Interactive Inc).

Some of those would quite probably be useful, please do share them with us!

I'm back in the UK now, so hopefully over the coming days I can look at the sounds that have been submitted and see what can be done with them. :)

If distribution of those mp3s with OpenTTD (or TTDPatch) is not allowed due to copyright reasons from the author, doesn't the same apply to the availability of those songs on that website?

If you mean transporttycoon.net (or any other site hosting them), then that may be the case, however, that is the site owner's responsibility.

Yes, they really should sue the owner for that, shouldn't they?

That's not quite what I said. ;) I simply meant that it was not the responsibility of the owner of the forums (in his role as forum owner), or the developers of OpenTTD (in their role as OpenTTD developers). And the fact that there is at least one instance of all three of those who is the same person is irrelevant. :P
