Question about terrain shading

Post by NitroX infinity »

I'm trying to create some terrain graphics but I need some help.

I've read FAQ's and used the search but I can't find the answer to my question:

How many different shades of terrain are there?
(I've counted 6 but I'm not 100% sure about it)

"shades"? If you're redoing the terrain, you can shade it however you please. Provided that the light still comes from the same direction, of course.
To get a good answer, ask a Smart Question. Similarly, if you want a bug fixed, write a Useful Bug Report. No TTDPatch crashlog? Then follow directions.

I'm referring to lighter and darker terrain as a result of it's orientation compared to the light-source.

Also, does the light come from the north-east (top-right) or east (middle right)?

Depends on how you define North - StraightUp or RightUp?

As you can see on the picture(s) above, the sun comes from NE-NEE or NEE-E for the land shading.

This question may open the classical wormcan, as I noticed when I asked it a while a go. If you search the forums, you will find that many artists see the light as coming from E, some even from SE.

Not even the original TTD sprites have completely uniform shading.

AndersI is right.
E or SE. Hope will not start a war again. Of course if you want to do something else it is up to you, but be prepared to change all the sprites, which is impossible I suppose

I prefer to be contacted through PMs. Thanks.

East would be easiest when it comes to shadows :P

But because the game is on an 'angle', SE may actually be easier.
