OK, now I'm curious. What do you think is an appropriate quantity of time?

One month? (time since my most recent bug report)
Nine months? (time since I first reported the longest standing GUI bug)
Eleven months? (time since I first reported the longest standing GRF-reading bug)[0]
One year? (time since TTDXC could last read TTDPatch's canon config file format)

[0] OK, so it's not causing a crash any more, but it's still reporting that there's an error in the GRF info, which is untrue. (TTDPatch accepts the file, therefore it is unarguably valid.)
To get a good answer, ask a Smart Question. Similarly, if you want a bug fixed, write a Useful Bug Report. No TTDPatch crashlog? Then follow directions.

can we merge all theese topics into one so we can discuss this further and speaking of that maybe it should have its own forum at the bottom since its still under bugfixing development.

I beg to differ!

I informed you that ttdxc was *very* helpful when I started, but (and this is the crucial point) as it is right now, it *changes* the .cfg just by opening and closing because it doesnt handle the bit switches correctly, removes any unknown switch, and doesn't merge the free switch settings with the autocreated ones.

As some of the bit switches are *impossible* to set in ttdxc, manual editing is *necessary* to configure ttdpatch for the moment. There's no opinion involved. It's a fact.

This is *not* a personal attack, it started some months ago as a bug report, which you have chosen to ignore, when instead probably had been easier to correct the program.

Read above again, I thanked you for the program, I told you it helped me enormously to get started with ttdpatch. But now, when I want to explore the newer parts of the patch, ttdxc leaves me in the dust, I'm *forced* to use hand editing even if I *want* to use ttdxc.

Judging by the arguments I'm inclined to say there is some sort of 'sloppyness' involved. On the other hand it's not always easy to maintain stuff you released. So can we keep that in mind a bit more, I'm afraid this is about to escalate otherwise.

I know how to use the switches now. Yay! For new users, i reccomend they read the wiki.

As for the game, I can't run it anymore. Everytime I start to play the game, windows gives me a paging file error, and then promptly closes TTD, which then cannot be restarted. No matter how I tinker with my paging file, or closing as many applications as possible to clear some RAM, I still can't run the game. This didn't used to be a porblem, so what's going on?

Perhaps I should default some switches and run the game again?

ok ... Can you attch your newgrf.cfg and your ttdpatchw.cfg files to your next post so we can look at them for you?
Also, look in your transport tycoon folder and if there is a crash.log file attach that too.
Which version of Windows are you using?

TTDXC is eminently useful, and all but essential for newbies.

Its admitted weaknesses and bugs cause problems for experts or people wanting to use some of the very newest and latest features. I tend to stay back from the bleeding edge a bit, so it doesn't bother me, but I can readily see the cause of the complaints.

The release cycle of new TTDXC versions is, let us say, longer than might be wished. But then that's true of all freeware, I suppose.

Perhaps fixing the bugs is harder than it appears? Because certainly, the critics of TTDXC could be instantly silenced by a new release with the problems solved.

I beg to differ. I had no problems configuring TTDPatch with Notepad. I was looking for a patch to make TTD work on XP, and found the Patch. I installed it, and was thrilled by the fact that I could play TTD again. I don't know exactly how it happened, but after a while I found this amazing little file called ttdpatch.cfg and opened it (with Notepad). I got even more thrilled, as there was lots of stuff I could change. Everything even came with a short description that told me everything I needed to know. I changed a few things, thinking that it was too good to be true, but when I ran TTD after saving the file, it turned out that it actually was true.

It took months for me to even think of looking for more TTD stuff on the web after this. But when I did, a whole new world opened, just like when I first found the ttdpatch.cfg file.

To be fair, it has to be mentioned that I used some programs for editing the cfg for a while, but I turned back to Notepad. Personally I can't see how TTDXC is better for newbies, since I found Notepad very userfriendly. But that's just my humble opinion; I've never had problems as a newbie.

By the fact that you even found the CFG file, that indicates that you are to some degree a techie, and thus not really a newbie.

Dell would not be happy to hear you say that, you would destroy 90+% of their market.

Good point. I know my way around with computers. When I try to explain something to less computer-literate, I always get the feeling that it's not that they have no way of understanding it, it is just that they think that they'll never figure it out, so they don't dare do anything, making it a self-fulfilling prophecy. If there is one thing I have learned in my years in front of the computer screen, it is that you have to take chances. If you don't dare do anything you'll never get far. Most of what I learnt about computers comes from trial and error.

That said, it was pure luck that I found the ttdpatch.cfg file and opened it in Notepad. But when I found it, it was because I was exploring. That's my message to the newbies out there: Take a chance. If you break TTDP by editing the cfg manually, just delete the file, and start TTDP again. Once you have a configuration you like, back up the file, and continue to experiment. If you break the game then, just revert to the backup.

Now that was a long post to get a simple point across. It is clear that I have a future in politics. :)

Dell's service department and customer support can do that on a slow afternoon in January.
