What do you think about lowering production for new cargoes

Less industry production (for new cargo schema)

Post by SHADOW-XIII »

Well, looking at new cargo schema it will be awesome hard to transport all goods, 1 industry, 1 industry line, will need great number of trains to work flawless even for standard (100%) production

so my idea is to lower production,
for 1st industry type (wood, coal) especially when it has only 1 destination (like iron ore)
and (for coders) set low production for other levels of industry

in my opinion it will be better to have less production, it will not need so many trains and, for those who need money, can give more money (so it will be balanced, you will get same money for less cargo)
1 train, for example 5 squares long, would be able to take 2 or 3 types of cargo and travel with them

what do you think ? vote at Poll ...

I want enough production, I want trains running all around, and I want them to actually have something to transport. To have enough production and to have to figure out how to transport them all adds fun to the game.

Anyways, it should be better when controllable with a difficulty setting or something.

I think this illustrates another limitation of TTD: map size. The fact that TTDPatch allows more industries is of course a challenge for artists but you have to remember that adding new industries creates a problem if the map size stays the same. You are bound to find it impossible to place and service all industries, as seems to be the case now. Lowering production isn't the solution because transport routes will turn out to be too short to have your trains fully reload between loading at Station A and unloading at Station B and returning at Station A for their next run. They will reload but probably spend more time loading which means less profit.

Hyronymus who said that cargo train can have only 2 destinations ...
it could start from a industry complex with few cargo types and visit few other stations (selloing 1 cargo here and other there)

I know the problem of rating appears here but if we lower the production amount then it will be same as is now

the idea in general (depends of course on a player but ...) would create trains with multiple cargos in 1 squad

Purno with so many industries and cargos I doubt you ever managed to transport all cargo on 1 map, waste of produciton, we could create a bit smaller netwotrks (not a huge but still big ones) and trains may need to cross big distance to get to proper industry anyway

Are you suggesting that trains will be able to sell only the goods that the station accepts, Shadow?

AFAIK, the number of total industries hasn't been increased, only the number of different types of industries in increased.

@Hyronymus: train always (without unload) sell what it can at station, if cannot sell it then carog stys at train

@Purno: I meant number of types of industry not general number of possible industries.

So you take a train to a 3rd station in an extreme effort to make profit?

EDIT: after some backtalk I wonder why not trying to limit the maximum production industries can have? Instead of the mx output of 1080 ton(ne)s of coal 540 i.e..

Why not add a switch in the difficulty settings / game options ?

That's correct, and it's the reason why I don't think anything needs to be done about the production.

The only difference is if you play with the minimum number of industries possible, i.e. one of each type. Then you'll have more industries, of course, but you still won't have any problems transporting the cargo.

Well, if anything it would be parameter for the .grf file that defines the new industries. I still think it won't be needed at all.

I would say, leave it alone for testing, and if it's a problem then revisit it.

However, if you make the quantities produced lower, then you must also make those cargoes more patient - i.e. they don't disapper from the station nearly as fast. Because otherwise, you will have to have just as many trains, only they will be shorter ones.

Ken, I think Purno already cracked this issue and Patchman acknowledge it: there aren't going to be more industries per climate (because that can't be done) but only more types of industry.

Yes, in theory that's fine, but you have to have an interlock so as to make sure the industry vectors are complete. Because you can't afford to buy an industry at the beginning of the game. Also, probably you'd need to make the industries more patient about not being served, because it would take much longer to get them all.

Well, TTD is guaranteed to place at least one of each industry type in a random game. That is, unless the industry says that it shouldn't be placed (like the lumber mill in the tropical climate).

But can the last industry of a type be closed down, in game?

yes it can, see the oilwells in temperate for example.

And it also happened to my factories in my latest game. But a new one appeared a couple of months later in a different place.

okey,
but just to point the main problem in my idea is that we got many more "connections" between industries, this will need very more vehicles to transport, in general if I decide to transport ALL cargo on map, I hope I will be able do that with just 5sq long trains (but I will probably hit the train limit) that's why I would like to see either less production or bigger wagons capacity, the first one would be easier and better

Oh. Well, I like to have very long trains, so that's not a problem for me.
