Netherlands Map [Rel]

Post by dave61 »

Seeing the fuss over the non-working Netherlands scenario I decided to have a go at map-making and an early version is attached. Before I go further, I would welcome some feedback on a couple of design choices:

a) I added some of the major waterways (Waal, Maas, IJssel and so on) but I fear they have been overdone. Do you agree and if so, which should be left out?
b) I opted to ignore the areas below sea level because they looked odd especially where they are directly adjacent to the water (or it could be because I'm nervous as I live in one of them). Should they be there, and must there be dykes separating them from the water?

Finally, my apologies to those in Limburg who may think their province has been cut off. I have actually made it "shorter" but "wider" to reduce the amount of map-space occupied by Belgium & Germany.

If anyone else fancies a go I used the following:
- trial version of Global Mapper ( http://www.globalmapper.com/ ) using digital elevation map from http://www.webgis.com/ with contours set at 25m
- waterways were overlaid using Powerpoint
- Irfanview to transfer screen dumps from Global Mapper to Powerpoint, resize, convert to greyscale and invert
- Mapgen http://www.brolinembedded.se/projects/mapgen/mapgen.zip to create the SC5 file

Apart from Mapgen there are lots of alternative software choices. You can find some of them at http://www.digitalgrove.net/ which has links to other mapping tools and data sources. It was not very hard; overall it took me about a day to find the software and data, figure out how to use it and produce what you can see so far.

I'm not familiar with Dutch geography, so bear with me.

a)I like the waterways - when you said they might be overdone I expected huge, wide rivers - those, I think, are perfect!

b)I don't think you need dikes in Locomotion (unlike Transport Tycoon) but I think they'd be a nice touch! I figure maps should try and capture the character of a place if they can. It's up to you, though, but I vote in favour of them.

I really like the map, and look forward to the populated version! :o

As requested. Some towns have been added to help orientation, locations are approximate, no fine tuning.

The map looks great, even the "little" hills in some parts are correct.
Don't place to much towns in it, because of the scale.
15 till 20 will do at most.

Ah, the great Maastricht problem.

It's difficult to include the whole of Limburg without also including a lot more of Germany and Belgium which doesn't seem to be in the right spirit. So, my solution is to reshape the province and I promise to include Masstricht but it won't be in exactly the right place.

I see you have made the city of vlissingen. But There is no Bridge connecting VLissingen to the other side of the westerschelde. The old connection between Vlissingen and Breskens was a ferry. But that's gone now and there is a Tunnel by Terneuzen.

Hope you have something about this info.

What about different scenarios which all have a specific part of the Netherlands. For example a map with Groningen, Friesland and Drenthe? Or a map with Limburg (and parts of Germany and Belgium)?

Maby a smaller part of the Randstad, with the following city's: Amsterdam, Haarlem, Den Haag, Beverwijk/Velsen.

The city's inside the marking should then be added.

Thanks for the input. The towns were put down with no editing simply to help people see the extent of the map. I will put some effort into them for the final version.

I will focus on the larger area first, maybe after that.

That'll be the first.

I decided to have a try with below sea level areas & dykes (but not all done yet). See attached WIP image.

Please could you Dutchmen out there give me some advice on location of industries in this wonderful country.

I have thought of the following:
- Brewery: Amsterdam, Leiden?, Belgian border?
- Factory: Eindhoven, Bodegraven
- Oil Refinery: Europoort area, along the IJ?
- Chemical Works: Europoort area?, Utrecht?
- Farm: more or less everywhere
- Forest: Hoge Veluwe area?
- Steel Mill: IJmuiden
- Coal Mines: Limburg
- Oilfield: N.Sea
- Sawmill: near Forest presumably
- Food Processing Plant: Oss, Den Bos

but I have no ideas for these:
- Paper Mill
- Power Plant
- Flour Mills
- Print Works
- Iron Ore Mines

and was not going to bother with these (subject to demand):
- Vineyard
- Oil Wells
- Winery
- Ski Centre (unless Zoetermeer)

Any comments/suggestions gratefully received.

I think that is a good place, But i know there is something with oil or gas in the city of Den Helder as well.
- Forest: Hoge Veluwe area?
I think that that is a good place for a forest, maybe you should place some forests in the eastern parts near the lakes in the south as well.
- Power Plant
Try to search the sites of nuon and essent, i think you will be able to find it there.
- Flour Mills
There are mills all over the netherlands, at least in noor-holland, where i live, they normally do wather, but they will also do grain I think.
- Print Works
I think every city has some of them, so you could place them, all over the country.
- Iron Ore Mines
I think you should place them near the other mines in limburg, i dont know any other places. I also think that they normally import this.

I hope to helped you enough

i can't leave this topic alone...

i'd add a steel mill in Twente. my parents live there, but Hengelo is famous for it's metal works and also for the salt (akzo) so maybe a chemical works.

you could place oil wells near the south-east of drenthe

grain farms in overijssel, drenthe, flevoland. livestock farms in friesland, groningen, flevoland

flevoland should also be below seelevel

note: if you add everything all those people (including me) ar telling you to, our country does get too full...

just one minor thing: why are we talking english in this topic
- because one non-dutchmen posted in this topic
- because non-dutchmen *might* be interested
- because owen wants us to :?

- because non-dutchmen *might* be interested
- because owen wants us to Confused

thoes are probly the two main reasons.
ITs also a map, and most people download new maps because they are getting bored of the old ones.
