I've been using steam in my Carbon Springs game, but my double-headed 4-8-2's and 2-8-2's didn't stand up to a pair of electrics. Slowly I'm electrifying. If the diesels were less expensive I'd wait to dieselize (mostly). This should be fixed in the latest release tho'.

Yes i would also otherwise use diesels rather than electrics...

The next version will have totally different pricing, and I think slightly adjusted stats.

right I'm probably the last one that downloaded the USset. I made a totaly new newgrf.cfg for it. But the usset is giving this lovely error. I'm not sure if it is a ttdpatch error or a nfo error, but it doesn't make it easy to play the set :)
I'm playing with alpha 33

You have to put the US set AFTER the DBXL set in your newgrfw.cfg file.

ehm, read and look again, there is no (i repeat that again: NO) dbxlset even in that negrf.cfg, not even with a #, it just isn't there, so how can I put it in front of it?

Obviously you must have the DB set installed.. Otherwise this error wouldn't have come.. Try tropic or arctic, and see if the error comes there too

Couldn't it be a coding mistake? (It is, I think.) You could, strangely, add the DB Set XL below it to workaround the problem.

You won't get it there, so you could try that too, broodje.

I haven't actually tested the set without the DB Set XL running at all (up until now, at least). I think I know why that is occurring but I can't test for sure because I've already changed that part of the code for the next release and I don't want to mess up my development. I don't get it myself, now, at least...

Thanks for spotting this, broodje.

Not sure if this has been posted in this topic yet, but the F7 has some weird positioning going on (in the latest version of the US Set)...

Remove the DB Set (original) from your newgrf[w].cfg as a workaround. Interesting bug; I hadn't spotted this before. The same thing happens with the Doodlebug because the DB Set original is setting them to smaller wagons and I'm not overwriting that property myself.

Thanks for spotting this; I've fixed it for the next release (as I really should do because this is a "supported" configuration).

Without being pushy, much less a pain, has there been any progress on revising the initial purchase and operating costs? While I do not wish to use cheat codes to stay ahead in the game, attempting to play a game with this set has me always penny-pinching. Thus I find it a bit difficult to note issues since I am always fiddling with something else.

One thing I did note - when buying an early steam engine, it automatically comes with a tender. Yet if I purchase a second engine using the control button, am I suppose to have a second tender included? That is: engine-tender-engine-tender-rolling stock...

Thanks again for the hard work being put into this set.

1. We do have a new costing schema that will appear in the next version. That said, we have intentionally designed the set to force you to penny-pinch. One problem with the original game is that very soon after you start, if you're at all a good player, you have more money than you know what to do with and it's no longer a challenge. I'm so good that even with the US set that happens after a decade or so, but it's certainly harder to accomplish. We wanted more of a challenge. One thing that you want to pay attention to is assigning the right locomotive to the right task; that makes a BIG difference.

2. If you buy a steam loco, yes you are supposed to get a tender with it. Did you buy a helper engine and get no tender? That's a bug. Which loco did that happen with?

Hi,

May I just say that I fully agree with Krtaylor. I love the operating costs as they are and the challenge they create. Please don't make it any easier...

Well, we want realism, and in reality, 4 F3's could replace a single steam locomotive costwise. I think halving the diesel's running costs will make it more realistic and still be challenging.

Yes, I agree that would make sense.

Anyway, the big diesels are only appearing at a later stage anyway, where you are either rich already or bankrupt, so it doesn't really matter at this stage (to me at least  )

I am up for a challenging game. During the height of playing in the past, I would bore of games once they reached the year 2000 since money was no object and everything was connected through numerous forms of transportation. Also, I like realism and thus was attracted to these sets. Yet what I find difficult is not the challenge of penny-pinching but of somehow justifying how one steam engine can have a running cost of over $35,000 in the very early 1930's. I can see such a cost in today's world, if not more expensive. But as an example, in 1931 I had a 2-8-2 Mikado pulling four livestock vans and a caboose approximately 60 lengths of track from farm to factory. Since it was a requested offer with the subsequent pay being four times the normal, I jumped at the chance. For the year's request, I made a total of not even $6,000 in profit. In 1932, I am running in the red with this route since there is no multiplied pay, much less any change in the output from the farm. Realistically, I should remove the whole route since running the one engine is not worth the loss. But I like to have things scurrying along across the map and penny-pinching of this nature is not fun, but work.

Again, I prefer the challenge of not having free rein to build wantonly across the map. But one aspect that must be examined when deciding prices is how much revenue is generated compared to the year in question. That is, the value of money for the services rendered. If the game has formulas that in a particular year will generate revenue with x item transported y spaces in z number of days, then unless this revenue is greater than the operating costs construed during z number of days, there would be no true point in using that particular item for transport. The game does not appreciate charity work.

As for the engine and tender combination, I did not find any bugs but was just curiously questioning if such set-up were the norm. While the tender did ~feed~ the steam engine, was there incidences in real life where two steam engines were connected with a tender following each?

Thanks again in advance,

In general, steam engines were coupled semi-permanently to their tenders. Wherever the steam engine went, its tender went too. Ordinarily railroads tried to have trains hauled by just one locomotive, but on steep mountains it was not uncommon to have two or even three, each with its own tender.
