Once upon a time, long ago there was MSDOS. It was the Big Kahuna of personal computing operating systems.
But wait, there were upstart newcomers trying to muscle in. PCDOS and DRDOS.
Microsoft tried to rub them out but failed because the new guys used different code to achieve the same result.
And it was good.
I would have to say that open is better it has more of a future then the patch does because people can edit the code of the game.
example Darkvater and his airports he has been working on for openttd
and the differnet hight bridges in use for openttd.
This can be an endless discussion, but let me present you with a new view.
TTDPatch simply alters the original code, thus it has a soul. Besides, many many many hours (ask Josef, Marcin, Norman, Oskar and Csaba) have gone into TTDPatch. A CPU couldn't care about wheter it's original or not, but humans do (at least I do)...
I suggest we resume this discussion a few months after the release of locomotion, and until every bug in OpenTTD has been eliminated (e.g. 100% aka stable...).

For now I prefer TTDPatch. But openttd makes fast progress, and when it becomes a bit more stable, and I can use custom train-sets and the bigger maps gets official I will probably begin to play openttd instead.
But for now my vote would fall on TTDPatch.
I chose Openttd, but only because the dev's have agreed to use original looking graphics, and they can use MB's graphics, also, because of darkv's new airports.
If you are rating it by how user friendly it is OTTD would definately win. At the moment though this is all it looks like, a user friendly TTD + TTDPatch. One thing to remember though, it is only version 0.3.2. A lot of stuff will probably happen before it gets to version 1.0.
At the moment though I am not really sure which version I like, I only have version 2 of TTDPatch (without even canals), and the last version of OTTD I used didn't have all this new stuff simular to the stuff from the patch.
They're both good and both have unique things going for them. TTDpatch has an impossible list. OpenTTD doesn't (at least it shouldn't have based on the fact it's C(++)).
TTD Patch obviously has more going for it right now since its more established and therefor more complete, but in the long run Open TTD is going to do much more. This is for a few reason but the largest of them is that with all new code Open TTD does not have the limitations TTD Patch does. Furthermore the intention of Open is to add features, but the intention of TTD Patch is to perfect the existing game.
