Re: The Thread Of Randomness
Many old computers are nowadays entirely usable, as for most needs applications' requirements haven't grown significantly recently. My desktop is a 6-years old Core 2 Duo 2x2GHz with 2GB of RAM and it still runs like crazy. For most of what I need (aside of gaming, which is mostly retro thus relatively lightweight, a bit of AutoCAD, MATLAB and MS Office work), it's still working like brand-new and shiny. That was predictable, as Core 2 gave me much slack power when it was new. But well, at my parents' house I still sometimes use 9-year old desktop with Celeron 2,4 GHz having just 1 GB of RAM... and it just works. Flash Player is laggy (it's always been a pile of crap, thank god we have HTML5 spreading), so I just uninstalled it and poof - Firefox runs well, so does MS Office. I don't need much more than that when at parents' house

Re: The Thread Of Randomness
Yeah, my mum's had a Pentium 4 Dell computer for just under 8 years now, and it still does everything she could possibly want to do with no issues at all! The only thing i've done (aside from a bit of spring cleaning every now and then) is upgraded the RAM to 3GB, to help smooth out modern web page rendering.
Re: The Thread Of Randomness
Well my main machine until about 2005 was a Celeron (about the equivalent of a P3) running 98SE. Apart from RCT3 and Theme Park it ran every game fine especially DOS TTDPatch.

Re: The Thread Of Randomness
My PCs were a 155Mhz Pentium, a 500Mhz AMD (K2?), a 1400Mhz Thunderbird, then a 2700+, followed by a 3700+ and then a C2D 6600 which I'm still using today and was among the best pieces of hardware I ever bought...
... unfortunately by now the thing has picked up some weird quirks. I basically have it running 24/7 for months and it doesn't mind, but when it's turned off for a while (few days) it'll take 3-4 reboots until it actually boots. Feels kind of like an old car ^^;;;

Re: The Thread Of Randomness
Sounds like the motherboard and/or power supply need recapping.

Hmm, what should I put here...
Re: The Thread Of Randomness
Yeah, it's the motherboard. Don't really feel like replacing it anymore though, if I'll ever get around to that I'll get an i5 or something along with it ^^
Re: The Thread Of Randomness
All this talk about old computers apparently made mine nervous...as soon as I clicked to open this thread I got a BSOD
Only the second one I've ever had.

Well, I wouldn't call it funny, one can chuckle for reasons other than hilarity or amusement in my case it was due to the inventive nature of the poster for getting the message across, its a safety poster. It's very unfunny by nature, as the fact its there would indicate it needs to be there as some poor person was injured at some pointUseYourIllusion wrote:Moderators, please move this the Funny Images threadJolteon wrote:This gave me a chuckle. Re: The Thread Of Randomness
I would say this is about the only place on this forum that nothing is Off-Topic. Jolteon, I agree that the image is unfunny because of why it is likely there.Jolteon wrote:Well, I wouldn't call it funny, one can chuckle for reasons other than hilarity or amusement in my case it was due to the inventive nature of the poster for getting the message across, its a safety poster. I would consider it quite insensitive if it was moved to 'funny images', and would rather the initial post and related posts were deleted than moved to there...

Re: The Thread Of Randomness
Well, the reason for the poster is not funny, but the concept and execution of delivering the message certainly is. But maybe that is the point, to make the poster noticed and get the message across.

I guess most people will just look at the "STAY OFF !" part and then staying off the billboard.Jolteon wrote:This gave me a chuckle. (large image, hence why not IMG tagged)

Re: The Thread Of Randomness
For many years, I've always enjoyed playing a very old simple and fairly bug-ridden football manager game called Total Club Manager 2004. Yeah, 2004. Just for fun, take a look at the below winners of the European Cup and the World Cup from 2004 onwards:
EU 2004: Greece (so yeah, it randomly got that spot on)
WC 2006: Sweden (no, I did not influence this)
EU 2008: Israel
WC 2010: Canada
EU 2012: Israel
WC 2014: Israel
Worth noting is that I coached Israel in 2012 and 2014. I did not in 2008, and I didn't coach Canada in 2010 either.
It did however get the Premier League fairly well:
2004: Arsenal
2005: Liverpool
2006: Arsenal
2007: Arsenal
2008: Manchester United
2009: Newcastle United
2010: Manchester City
2011: Manchester United
2012: Manchester United
2013: Aldershot Town FC (me!)

Re: The Thread Of Randomness
Well, finally realised why I wasn't losing any weight. I had replaced my chocolate snacks with snacking on a hard boiled egg, i'd cook like ten at the start of a week, and put them in the fridge to cool and enjoy during the week, take one out when i felt peckish.
Just got informed that hard boiled eggs aren't really all that healthy, as the yolk is full of cholesterol. The white is pretty good though, shame the yolk is the good bit.
Need to think of something else I can snack on, that isn't green preferably.

My parents managed to find a number of vegan recipes which closely mimic other foods, like casseroles and pies.

Banana bread. Delicious and nutritious! I could even send you a recipe if you want!
