Invisible engine set

Post by gebik »

presenting...
INVISIBLE ENGINE SET :)

This GRF does almost nothing, just adds one engine with invisible 1*1 px sprite and a wagon version. Now you can put any wagon on side track, just add engine at one end of train! For advanced eye candy is possible to put invisible wagon(s) into consist and you have more visible consists on one track.
I got this idea while I was playing with V4 set, which has actually one, but as refit. So I decided to make small NewGRF with only one engine using same principle, thus usable with any train set of your taste.
If you find something wrong with it, please, report it here. First, read the readme, if that is not intentional or known.

In what way does this improve on Emperor Jake's Invisible Leading Engine NewGRF from 2011?

For some time I been using Emperors Invisible Engine so I can see the front end of the carriages when I tested them make sure they align and colours looked good (locos use to block that view). Then a few weeks ago I made my own and added it to the new train set I doing AuzTrainsNSW_overhaul to save on grf files for same purpose to see fronts of my carriages.

But as Fredinho mentioned:
Fredinho wrote: 23 May 2021 15:57 Wonderful, will be useful in eye candy games. Thanks
How true. Put freight wagons in siding or have big marshaling yards with some wagons having engines and some not.

Like what you done making it really small.

Just goes to show great minds think alike. Cheers

EDIT: I have not tested your engine yet. Had a look at your coding and the engine only has 1 kw of Power .. have you tested it on long trains? Maybe be ok if it had more power and a bit faster speed in case a play has a long way to haul his wagons to a siding out in the country. Just a suggestion. Others wise good job

In fact, I did not know about that set. I have studied it now, and:
  • My set is in NML.
  • I can add that engine for any requested railtype.
  • That set was last updated in 2011.
  • That set looks like cheaty option to override GRF restrictions and mechanics, what is not intented with this set.

Ok, I will raise the power a bit to 20 kw. Speed is, I think, almost enough, since player can build a temporary depot near the siding almost everytime, or already has depot there, for example at a big station, so I will raise that to 80 km/h. Again, I don't want players to cheat, because my engine has really low costs with a coefficient of 0.

Version 1.0.1 is out! Engine parameters are now raised to 20 kw and 80 km/h.

Very nice!
Especially after your improvements for power and speed, it's a very good replacement to some of the older ideas that were available and much more user-friendly.

To complete the museum of previous invisible engines, there was also this one:
viewtopic.php?p=666951#p666951

EDIT:
Just read about the idea of adding an invisible wagon too.
That would be a very good addition!

Just had a look at the post .. would anyone use meglev and monrail invisible locos. As I image these trains would be stores with engines both ends and not shunt wagons into sidings.

My 5 cents ...
Invisible Engines ...
Nothing new ... long been implemented in CanRail ... CanRail v3.0 will go one step further, it will have steam engines with tender shunting backwards ...

Yes, I know this is nothing new. I meant this for those sets without anything of this type such as 2cc trains or CZTR. It would be strange for me to put a whole big train set into game just for invisible engine when player plays with different train set. In fact there are many train sets, while only your set, Auz Trains NSW Overhaul and V4 trainsets have one build in. BTW, is your set on BaNaNaS? I did not even hear about it until now.

Many newer members of this forum have not heard about the Canadian Theme Pack, a collection of about 12 GRFs, all about Canada, covering all aspects of the game. It had to be taken off air due to some unwelcome interference, but work continued nonetheless. Anyway, no it is not available at the fruit shop and won't be for some time, i.e. until it is done.
