OTTD for Win 9x

Post by Mr.Hunt »

Hello! Lately, a lot of people are starting to get nostalgic for retro systems. There are more and more fans who want to plunge into the delights of old technology, old operating systems, and old games. I understand that such a powerful game as OTTD is designed for newer PCs. As of version 1.8.0, there are no more builds for 9x. Which is extremely sad. Because I want to use all the improvements that are in the latest builds. My question is for the people who compile the builds. Is it possible to make builds 14-15 to run on Win9x?

No, all the code that was required to support older Windows versions was removed. It would be a very large task to add compatibility with old versions back in. There is also the issue of finding a C++ compiler that both supports the modern language features the source code uses and at the same time can target Windows 9x.

A major reason the support was removed was to be able to modernize the code base, and make it simpler to maintain. None of the active developers have (had) the time or setup to realistically test and make sure everything works on those systems. It's the same reason support for many other platforms has also been removed in the past several years.

(By the way, you posted this in the "Forum suggestions and feedback" category - that's for talking about the TT-Forums website, not about OpenTTD, which is further down on the front page.)

Yes, I'm sorry for posting in the wrong topic. It would be great, though, if the guys decided to restore writing to the old system. Seeing how something new works on the good old 9x is always pleasing, and for a retro user it's always a pleasure.

What's the point of porting new versions of the game to an OS that's thoroughly obsolete? If you like to use retro software, the good old Transport Tycoon seems to be a more logical choice for you.

New features, fixed some bugs. Why not if it will possible? As I said earlier, the trend of retro PCs in recent years has increased, and giving people the opportunity to see a new version running on an old system is always great.

OTTD is open source maintained by unpaid volunteer software developers.

They can choose whatever they want to direct their ressources to. Obviously, they have decided to drop some very old systems to simplify code management.

Thus, either you pay somebody to do the modifications you're interested in, learn to do them yourself, or live with the fact that they are gone.

Personally, as much as I have enjoyed computer game since the mid-1980s or so, I want more fine new featured added, like recently the road stops, the import of town lists to the scenario editor, the badges that will be added in v15, and more surprises hopefully to come in the next years.

Because its old and a lot of people do not use it. It makes no sense for the developers to pander to a very little used operating system in [current year]. It's a bunch of extra code, and they will be constantly fighting with the limitations of the lowest common denominator. Having to do workarounds to get things to work, because they have to remember to obey to rules set in Windows 95/98/98SE. If you open it back up to operating systems that old, you will also get people trying to play it on those Windows versions, and some of them will have -very low- hardware. Trying to get it to work on some Pentium 2, and then complaining how awful it runs after an amount of vehicles.
