Vehicles getting old

Post by Wienish »

Hello there fellow Transport Tycooners,

I am new on this forum, so one of these days I will introduce myself properly on this forum.

I have been an addict of Chris Sawyer's Rollercoaster Tycoon, from part 1 until 3 (I prefer 2 the most, since it still has the old 'basic' looks and it all depends on how you want it), and I discovered Transport Tycoon on iOS a few weeks after it was released. I felt the magic again from playing games that are made in this style, and in a certain way the amount of options you have. Finding out what works perfect is a pain in the behind, but it's a pain I truely don't mind having. Puzzling things out while holding a strategy for getting a level that gets money rolling in as fast as the light goes.

On my iPhone, I quickly came to the discovery that my mobile phone doesn't like the calculations of having over 50 trains gliding over the rails, and a similar amount of planes flying in the air. So I needed something new, and I thought "Why not look if there's something similar for my laptop". To my surprise, there is. To my surprise as well, there's a whole network of fans playing a game that's based on a game that released in the year after my birth.

So I started puzzling from scratch again. How do I build railroad tracks? How do I make a city grow faster? How can I make 40 planes go the same route without having to set all 20 stops in it again.. I found those things out, and I discovered the settings, where you can allow or can not allow planes to crash, disasters to occur or make it possible to have more trains going on and on.

To be honest, I haven't read everything that's on this forum (yet), so I might missed the grand solution to the problem I am facing now; In Transport Tycoon on the iOS device, trains are getting older, but i am not getting messages every year that a train urgently needs replacing. It just malfunctions more often, which is solved by simply having 2-3 engines running at one train. In OpenTTD, I figured out the 'hard' way things don't work the same, and with 200 trains running up and down, it happens a lot that trains need replacement.

My questions are now:
1. Is there a way to disable the wear of trains, planes and other vehicles?
2. If there isn't, is there a way to, like on the iOS app, replace a train or airplane with a new one, without having to setup all stops again?

I would like to get an answer to this.

Thank you guys in advantage, and thank the development team for setting up a game that is as fun and timekilling, as it was awesome 20 years ago (I hope it was awesome back then, otherwise there's something wrong with human taste).

Kind regards,
Wienish

Yes and Yes.

You can disable breakdowns in the advanced settings. You can select there as well whether vehicles will want servicing nevertheless.
You can also use autorenew and autoreplace to buy a new version of the same or a newer vehicle type in replacement respectively.

http://wiki.openttd.org/Autorenew#Autorenew
http://wiki.openttd.org/Autoreplace#Autoreplace
http://wiki.openttd.org/Autorenew#Disab ... et_to_none

You might need to select all settings types and categories at the top of the adv. settings window. You can use the search box to find them in the long list.

Both! :D

1) Advanced Settings -> Vehicles -> Vehicle Breakdowns -> None.

2a) To replace vehicles with new vehicles of the same type when they get old (and if that type is still available to purchase), enable Advanced Settings -> Vehicles -> Autorenew -> Autorenew vehicle when it gets old.

2b) To replace vehicles of one type with vehicles of a newer type while keeping the orders, see the wiki, because I'm too lazy to explain it in this post.

Welcome to OpenTTD, and TT-Forums, and whatever other related overlapping communities you've just blundered into! :P

A big thank you to both of you for the quick response. As it is nearly 1AM in here, I wasn't expecting such quick answers.

Thanks for welcoming me.

I've seen part of the wiki and part of the manuals, but I believe the Bible would fit three times in the information available on Transport Tycoon. I'm going to try it out right now :)

Also, planetmaker, I am having an issue with the chatbox onthis forum. Can I PM you about that or do I need to go to someone else?

I'm not planetmaker, but if you mean the 'Chat' button at the top of the forum it's been known-broken for a year or so. :?

You should probably bring it up again in Forum Suggestions and Feedback, because it seems to have been forgotten about.

In the meantime, you can use any other IRC client (web-based or standalone) to access #openttd or #tycoon on irc.oftc.net - all the chatbox does is provide a convenient web-interface to those channels from the forum.
The former is usually occupied (when it isn't midnight!), the latter is generally rather quiet and the bot will insult you.
