IOS/Android App

Post by johnners »

So recently it has come to my attention that there is literal NO good tycoon app on the apple app store and I think it would be a very good idea if they gathered a small group of people to port the game to apple and android devices, Heck I'd pay for a chance to play my favourite tycoon on the go. Plus I think the game would be much easier on a touch screen!

Feel free to post any ideas about how the game would actually operate on a touch screen, and hopefully we can make this happen!

You better first gather ideas on how or money with which to convince apple to allow programmes under the GPL into their store. Afaik we do have an android version in the respective app store.

Also search this forum for countless threads on these topics.

Maybe you can gather a small group of people and you can port the game? Of course you might find that Apple, being the thieving, hypocritical locktards that they are might not let you put the port in the store. But what does that matter?

Well, it isn't:

It operates very badly - unfortunately, trying to build railways and roads using Android touch screens is always going to be difficult.

For me, OpenTTD is not a game that should be played on mobile systems; it would need massively simplifying to be enjoyable in short bursts. Maybe tablets are different, but on mobile phone devices the game's a bit unwieldy (no fault of the game).

Hello,

I cannot speak for the Apple side of things, but there was an Android version available. Indeed, it still resides on my Asus. But as Dave W mentions, its not much fun because the scale of the game exceeds the capabilities of my fat fingers.

On a related note, many thousands of users enjoy the sim/strategy tycoon games released by Kairosoft (for iOS and Android). I think they are certainly worth a look, I own several and daily lament the fact that they are not available for PC's I found an Android Virtual box so now I play them on my win machines as well.

@OP Huh, I just noticed this was your first post. Welcome!

For the android : Theres already a port available, and may I notice you, it is examined by official OTTD Devs while it was blocked some time ago (fixing mostly). So you can say, its half-official :o

For iOS : Maybe we only need an Apple compatibility maintainer again... (its what we are lacking of), as I still remember some very loong time ago I can install Simutrans on iPhone with one of the OSX version. I'm not sure by today through. :?

It is not possible to get OpenTTD in the App Store because the App Store terms explicitly forbid some of the freedoms that OpenTTD's license (GPL) grants. Even if we wanted to switch OpenTTD license to a different license that allows to impose restrictions on how the program is distributed (personally I can say that I would oppose such change), it would not be feasible to contact with all the people who have made a contribution to OpenTTD and request that they accept a modification of the license under which their contribution is distributed (for an example see http://adium.im/pipermail/devel_adium.i ... 07973.html). The other option is to convince Apple to modify their terms and allow GPL applications in their platform again, although that's probably not very feasible either (see http://www.fsf.org/blogs/licensing/more ... nforcement).

I would also oppose changing OpenTTD's license just to get foothold into one company's proprietary service.

As for running OpenTTD on a tablet, the problem is that the user interface is designed for usage with mouse and keyboard. So far porting the game to Android OS for use on tablets and phones has not been very successful. The game easily compiles and runs, but the actual gameplay experience varies wildly, based on your screen size, resolution, and the manual dexterity of the individual player. For OpenTTD to be successful on a mobile platform as it has been on standard computing platforms, a significant change to the UI will be required.

Hello All

First post on this forum.

With regards to this question i have to say the game is great on Andriod, I ave recently re-discovered the game. i use to be on TT all the time when younger and swapped to Loco when that finally came out but due to the game not running on the latest versions of windows i stopped using it, even thought about building an old pc with WIN95 just to play.

However after finding it in the play store under a chance encounter i am again hooked, i have the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 so find the game reasonably easy to use, I have the PEN which allows me to be ultra accurate, and the big screen feels big enough for me to use, the graffix and processor of the tablet seem to cope when with the game and everything else that goes on in the background.

only few issues i find is navigation when building, you have to unselect what you are build before scrolling around otherwise you build track/road/canal anywhere

the map feature is un-scrollable

unable to rotate around 360 to view at different angles, but i am unsure if the original game had this i know it was possible in loco.

Thanks for the quick reply,

After singing the praises of this app and the function on the samsung galaxy note tablet I have encountered a problem, I updated the tablet to the latest android software (jelly bean) and now the S Pen will zoom in and out when scrolling, it wilk also have a mind of its own when trying to construct anything.

Any ideas what coukd be causing these issues??

You may want to ask this in the [url-http://www.tt-forums.net/viewtopic.php?f=29&t=61351]OpenTTD Android Port[/url] discussion where the developer, Pelya, will see it.
